Applications are invited for the post of Head of Gatsby Plant Science Education Programme in the Sainsbury Laboratory, to lead a small expert team implementing a range of high-profile projects funded by the Gatsby Charitable Foundation.

The aim of the programme is to have big impacts on science teaching in UK schools and colleges through the Science and Plants for Schools (SAPS) programme, as well as improving the perception of plant science amongst post-16 and undergraduate biology students. Candidates must be able to promote a strong belief in the importance of plant science education and competently manage a team whilst setting challenging but realistic targets.

Applicants must have a first degree (or equivalent professional experience) in the biological sciences, with a demonstrable broad knowledge of the UK STEM education context. A current significant profile amongst key stakeholders in the plant science and/or science education communities is essential, alongside a deep understanding of at least one of the following fields: 11-19 science education, undergraduate bioscience education. Previous experience of developing strategic partnerships on a national and local scale would be advantageous.

Successful candidates will have excellent strategic project and programme management skills, in addition to experience in managing financial budgets. Strong interpersonal and communication skills are required, with the ability to work in a helpful and diplomatic manner with a wide range of people at all levels. Most importantly, we are looking for a conscientious team leader who will build upon the continuing success of the projects with enthusiasm, flexibility and creativity.
