Job overview

Head of Geography

Full time post required for September 2017

We are seeking an inspiring and highly able teacher to lead this successful department.  This is an excellent opportunity for a dynamic and well-qualified teacher with imagination and drive to contribute to the development of this subject within an outstanding Humanities Department.

With a top honours degree from a leading university in Geography and, ideally, experience of independent education, you should be capable of stretching students of high ability as well as supporting students across the ability range.  Personal engagement, ability and drive are essential alongside a fundamental understanding of how to get the best out of people. You need the imagination, commitment and ambition to challenge and inspire students to enjoy the subject and the insight and enthusiasm to convey its intricacies at the highest levels. You should be familiar with IT and its use as a tool for learning, teaching and administration and be prepared to develop your skills further.

The successful applicant will be expected to build on our successful, engaging approach and will have the scope to develop it.  Geography is a compulsory subject for pupils in Years 7-9 and a popular option at GCSE and A level.  Responding to the needs of the individual student – be it preparing for examinations in after-school classes or guiding the most able through the Oxbridge process – is at the heart of the faculty’s ethos.  The faculty contributes to the broader co-curricular life of the School with visits abroad and locally as well as seminars.

Teachers at Ashford School enjoy a welcoming, comfortable and well-resourced environment and are provided with assistance from a range of support staff.  All teachers act as tutors and are expected to contribute to the busy co-curricular life of the school.

Salary by negotiation and dependent on skills, attributes and qualifications of the successful candidate. The school provides extensive opportunities for employees to develop personally and professionally.

Closing date: 12 noon, Monday 8 May.   Interviews: w/c 8 May

Ashford School is an equal opportunities employer and welcomes applications from all suitably qualified candidates. We are committed to safeguarding and promoting the welfare of children and all applicants must be willing to undergo child protection screening, including checks with past employers and the DBS.  Ashford School is a member of United Learning Registered Charity No. 1016358

About Ashford Senior School

Ashford School is one of the UK's leading coeducational independent day and boarding school, founded in 1898, and voted Independent School of the Year 2010/2011.  The school was endorsed as outstandingly successful in every category during the most recent inspection in 2014.  In September 2014, Ashford School became a Teaching School; only one of four Independent Schools in the UK to do so.  There are 850 pupils, comprising Bridge Nursery in Ashford, looking after children of 3 months to three years old; Ashford Prep School in the rural village of Great Chart, a preparatory school for children between 3 and 11, and Ashford School, a senior school for girls and boys aged 11 to 18, occupying a prominent 25+ acre site close to the centre of Ashford and within a short walk of the International Station. There are good rail, road and bus links to Ashford and London (37 minutes) and the school operates its own bus services to outlying villages.

Teachers at Ashford enjoy a welcoming, comfortable and well-resourced environment and are provided with assistance from a range of support staff.  All teachers act as tutors and are expected to contribute to the co-curricular life of the school. Responding to the needs of the individual student - be it preparing for examinations in after-school classes or guiding the most able through Olympiad problems - is at the heart of the department and School ethos.
