Job overview

If you are an experienced German teacher who can foster a love of German in pupils, this is an exciting opportunity to play a key role in the Modern Languages department at Blackheath High School.

German is very popular at Blackheath High School and there is a lot of enthusiasm for it. As Head of German, you will ensure this continues, and that pupils understand the importance of German in the global community.

You will be responsible for teaching German to students of all age ranges from 11 – 18 and will equip pupils with sound linguistic skills through challenging and differentiated lessons.

Leading by example, you will ensure the smooth and efficient running of the department and inspire and motivate a team of subject specialists through your own passion for the subject.

You will also be working closely with the Head of MFL to embed the MFL department vision and development plan and will contribute effectively to the MFL calendar and running of trips, such as organising and leading regular trips to Germany.

The ability to teach German across the full range of KS3, KS4 and KS5 and another language to GCSE is desirable. Spanish would be desirable at KS4.

There are many good reasons to work with us. Blackheath High School has a real sense of community, and you’ll be part of it. You’ll be part, too, of the wider GDST family and you’ll be in the company of some of the best and brightest people in independent education.

About Blackheath High School

Blackheath High School is an exceptional day school for girls aged 3 to 18. Our location helps to make it so, sitting on the edge of the stunning Heath and within easy reach of historic Greenwich and the buzz of Canary Wharf. We have galleries, museums, libraries and theatres on our doorstep, along with all the beauty of Greenwich Park and Blackheath. Our students benefit from the very best London has to offer.

Founded in 1880 as the first purpose-built school established by the Girls’ Day School Trust (GDST), Blackheath High is a school with a long history of educating a rich social and cultural blend of students, thus reflecting the cosmopolitan character of London itself. We welcome bright and engaging students, eager to benefit from the broad education we provide and offer a number of academic bursaries and scholarships to maintain the mix of socio-economic backgrounds within our student population.

Girls aged 3-4 years begin their exciting educational journey in the Blackheath High EYFS in a tailor-made setting in the centre of Blackheath Village. All activities undertaken in the pre-school are cross-curricular but follow the EYFS Principles and girls benefit from regular trips to the Forest School as well as the well-equipped outdoor play area.

Blackheath High Junior School delivers an all-round education: academic excellence within a balanced education for every girl at every stage. Within a safe, caring environment, girls develop the confidence to seize fresh opportunities and try new experiences.

The School enjoys a strong academic reputation. In 2023 the A level results were outstanding, with 72% of grades awarded A*-B, and GCSE results were similarly strong, with 74% of grades awarded 7-9. A dedicated and highly experienced group of staff provides expert advice to students who are applying to the University of Oxford or University of Cambridge, and to competitive courses such as Medicine, Veterinary Science and Dentistry. The vast majority of leavers secure places at Russell Group Universities each year.

Blackheath girls have poise, principles and character. There is no such thing as a ‘typical Blackheath girl’ and that is for good reason. This is a school where individuality is cherished and there is a culture of high expectations and open-mindedness. It is for this reason that our girls go on to such a diverse range of exciting and interesting careers all over the world.
