Job overview

The School

Fettes College is a leading HMC co-educational boarding and day school close to the heart of Edinburgh. It has a strong tradition of academic, sporting and cultural excellence underpinned by outstanding pastoral care. Fettes opened its doors in 1870 and became fully co-educational in 1980: it is now an Independent school of some 760 boys and girls. There are 550 pupils in the Senior School (13-18 years), of whom 75% are boarders, and 210 pupils in the Preparatory School (7-13 years). The academic staff in the College consists of the Headmaster and 80 full-time members of the Common Room. Our Prep School shares the same site and consists of a further 25 full-time teaching staff.

Fettes College stands on a magnificent site of approximately 100 acres, but still within walking distance of Edinburgh’s city centre. The historic main building holds the Chapel, Library, the English, Classics and History Departments as well as the Medical Centre and two boarding houses. A large newly-built teaching block (the Spens Building) houses Art, Modern Languages, Mathematics, Economics, Geography, and Music. The Theatre, Science Laboratories and Dining Hall are adjacent. The Preparatory School and seven further boarding houses (including a purpose-built U6th House) are also on the campus. Our sports facilities (including extensive playing fields, two all-weather pitches and a private Health Club) are excellent.

The Physical Education Department

There are six full-time members of the Physical Education Department and a number of part-time teachers and instructors. All staff at Fettes, however, make a full contribution to the Games programme. It is a friendly and energetic Department committed to the teaching of Physical Education and to providing an up-to-date and relevant Games Programme.

A varied programme is offered making full use of the splendid facilities in the School’s Westwoods Sports Centre, incorporating a 25-metre six-lane pool, double netball-sized hall, fitness suite, dance studio and astro turf Multi-surface pitch.

As Head of Girls’ Games, the successful candidate would be responsible for leading and organising the Girls’ Games programme, in close consultation with the Director of Sport. The current Head of Girls’ Games coaches hockey, lacrosse, tennis and netball. An ability to coach other sports to a high level would be acceptable.

The role will require the successful candidate to:

• Work closely with the Director of Sport on the future direction and strategy for sport at Fettes College

• Manage and control the budget for girls’ games

• Manage the visiting coaches for girls’ sport

• Work closely with the Games Department administrator to organise inter-school and house matches along with transport, catering etc.

• Manage the allocation and supply of kit for the girls’ sports teams

The Games Programme at Fettes is very full and a major time-commitment is required of the staff. The successful candidate must be able to coach at a high level, be well organised and have good inter-personal skills.

In addition, all of the Third Form do a double period of PE a week and examination courses are offered at GCSE, A Level and SEHS at IB. The A Level course attracts a small but committed group of students. Numbers at GCSE are very healthy and the results outstanding. In the past two years, over 30 students have taken GCSE PE with 58% achieving an A* and the remainder A grades.

The successful candidate may be able to offer to contribute to the teaching of GCSE and A Level PE but this will not be a condition in attracting the right candidate.

In addition to their classroom teaching, all Fettes staff make significant contributions to the varied extra-curricular life of this vibrant boarding school.

Conditions of the Appointment

1. The appointment will date from the start of the Autumn Term 2018 or Spring Term 2019.

2. Salary will be by negotiation and will depend on the qualifications and experience of the successful candidate.

3. Employment will be subject to one term's notice on either side.

Other details and conditions of service can be discussed at interview.

The application form, accompanied by a covering letter, CV and the names and addresses of three referees, should be sent to the Headmaster, Fettes College, Carrington Road, Edinburgh EH4 1QX (Tel: 0131 311 6701 or emailed to recruitment@fettes.com). If you apply via TES, please ensure that your supporting statement is uploaded as a separate document.

The closing date for applications is 1pm on Friday 1 June 2018 and interviews will be held on Friday 8 June.
