Job overview

Queen Mary's seeks to appoint an inspirational, dynamic and extremely competent Head of History and Religious Studies, with the ability to inspire and motivate children of all abilities, and to stimulate the pupils’ real interest and love of the subject throughout the School.

This is a full-time role and it is desirable that the outstanding candidate would have the ability to teach History and Religious Studies (the ability to teach Geography would be of interest), in Key Stage 3 and 4.

The Head of History and Religious Studies will be responsible for the strategic leadership and management of this thriving Department. The department has a broad and balanced curriculum designed to engage pupils with the real-life applications of the subjects. We want pupils to have an appreciation and curiosity for the subject and be excited to study the subject at a greater depth. History and Religious Studies helps pupils understand about the world in which we live. All pupils study History at KS3 and it is a very popular GCSE option.

Our pupils make excellent progress, and we achieve consistently outstanding results. The pupils experience History through exemplary teaching and learning as well as extracurricular activities such as clubs and trips to the theatre, visits to historical sites all which extend our pupils’ understanding.

Would you be willing to contribute to the extra-curricular life of this busy, exciting and successful school? Are you a pro-active team player, always positive, inspirational, flexible, and calm under pressure, when working in a busy school environment? If you have the energy, commitment and enthusiasm to achieve outstanding academic outcomes and infuse children with a life-long passion for learning, we want to hear from you.

As a boarding and day school we maintain the traditions of boarding, working an extended teaching day (08:30-16:40 plus an evening duty until 20:00 every other week during term time).

Candidates are required to provide a History and/or Religious Studies After School Club after school one evening each week from 16:45 until 17:30 and will be required to plan and deliver a weekly lunchtime intervention to GCSE pupils in response to data.

Girls from Year 8 upwards have Saturday morning school, with teachers required to work approximately 8 Saturday mornings a year.

Candidates must hold the Right to Work in the UK to be eligible for shortlisting

Owned by the Woodard Corporation, Queen Mary's School is an all girls’ independent boarding and day school situated in beautiful countryside, close to Thirsk and the Hambleton Hills. Junction 49 of the A1 is about 2 miles away. Founded in 1925, the school was originally situated at Duncombe Park, but moved to its present site in 1985. Baldersby Park, the School's current home, is a Grade 1 listed building surrounded by 40 acres of landscaped grounds, sports fields and paddocks.

We have a Reception and pre-prep department (currently one form entry in each year group) but the main School is for girls only and spans the age range 7 to 16. While we prepare a few girls for Common Entrance at 11, 12 and 13+, most girls stay on and do GCSE with us, before moving to new schools and colleges for the sixth form.

The School has a strong boarding tradition but we have an increasing number of day girls and those who board one or two nights each week.

As featured in The Good Schools Guide in 2017 Queen Mary’s School

‘provides exceptional education that focuses on creating girls with confidence, a “have a go” mentality and freedom to grow into their own skin.’ This is a character-building independent girls’ school in which nobody even bothers talking about gender because all the girls grow up thinking there’s nothing boys can do that they can’t. At the forefront of this approach, is an outdoorsy, adventurous attitude towards learning. ‘We deliberately encourage the girls to take risks in a controlled environment and a lot of that is to do with adventure – so the girls swim, canoe and kayak in the river, camp out on the river banks, use our climbing wall and scaffolding poles, learn bush craft, build dens, climb trees – you get the picture,’ says head Carole Cameron. It’s not that the girls are forced into any of these activities, but shrinking violets these girls are not and they come out all the more robust and resilient for it.’
