Francis Holland School, Regent’s Park, was founded in 1878 by the Reverend Canon Francis Holland and is regarded today as one of London’s most academically selective girls’ independent day schools. The school is situated next to Regent’s Park and has a reputation for its friendly, cohesive atmosphere. The ISI Inspection Report in March 2022 assessed Francis Holland as ‘Excellent’ in all key areas of school life.

Entry to the school is very competitive and pupils are selected via entrance examinations and interview at 11+ or Sixth Form. Girls achieve exceptionally good results in examinations at GCSE and A Level, and progress to some of the best universities in the UK, as well as to top global institutions such as those in the US. There are close links with our “sister” school at Francis Holland, Sloane Square, which was founded in 1881. The school offers a large number of bursaries, in addition to music, academic and art scholarships, all of which are means-tested.

Moreover, the school offers a plethora of co-curriculum activities, more than seventy clubs and societies are available every week: before school, at lunchtimes and after school. Music, drama and sport are particularly strong. Community voluntary work and charitable activities are enthusiastically supported by staff and pupils. Achievement beyond academic results is regarded as essential for FHS students and all teachers are expected to contribute fully to extra-curricular activities.

The school places great emphasis on the professional development of its entire staff. Staff at Francis Holland School enjoy a significant range of professional benefits. A comprehensive schedule of continuing professional development and INSET training, both internal and external, is provided for all staff. An interest free loan for travel season ticket is offered to all staff, on application to the Bursar. Daughters of staff are offered a 50% reduction in school fees.

We are seeking an inspirational and experienced teacher to lead the School’s History of Art Department from January 2025. The post is available at a minimum of 0.6 fte but could be available full-time for a candidate who can offer an additional subject.

History of Art is a well-regarded and popular subject within the school. The Edexcel History of Art specification is taught exclusively at A level, to years 12 and 13. Girls consistently achieve impressive results at A level. Many FHS pupils go on to study History of Art at top universities.

The History of Art department usually takes at least one trip a year to visit major art galleries in foreign cities such as Paris, Florence or New York. The department constantly makes good use of London galleries and museums and has organised trips abroad to various cities in recent years. 

The successful candidate will be an excellent teacher and will teach carefully prepared lessons and adapt the departmental scheme of work. They will have the ability to teach History of Art throughout the Sixth Form. The candidate should have a keen interest in Teaching and Learning, a willingness to explore different teaching styles to differentiate learning and a desire to promote the subject throughout the school. Knowledge and experience of the Edexcel History of Art A level syllabus would be an advantage.

Francis Holland School, Regent’s Park, is a leading independent school, for girls aged from 11-18, located in Marylebone, central London. There are currently over 550 pupils on roll. Francis Holland is in the top 30 independent schools in London for GCSE and A Level grades.

Francis Holland School was founded in 1878 by the Reverend Canon Francis Holland. It was originally opened in Baker Street, where it remained until 1915, before relocating to a new purpose-built site near Clarence Gate. The School has since expanded to include a Classics Centre and a Seminar Room, both on Ivor Place and a state of the art Sixth Form Centre, Linhope House.
