We are seeking an enthusiastic and dynamic teacher to lead this successful department and achieve our goal of excellence. Candidates should have excellent communication skills, a track record of improving results and a passion for history education.

The History Faculty is highly successful. In 2017, students achieved 71% A*-C at GCSE and 77% A*-C at A Level.

At KS4 all students pursue a humanity and history is a very popular option. There are currently 3 examination classes per year. A Level also continues to be popular with two sets in both Lower and Upper Sixth.

Verulam is a high achieving boys’ school with a mixed sixth form, which forms part of the highly successful BeauSandVer consortium. Verulam became an academy in August 2011.

The school has rapidly improving GCSE and A Level results. Verulam pupils were in the top 8% of boys for Progress 8 nationally.

Verulam School is committed to safeguarding and promoting the welfare of children and young people and expects all staff and volunteers to share this commitment.

Informal visits to the school are encouraged. If you wish to have a tour or discussion, please contact Kelly Bonass, Head’s PA on kelly.bonass@verulam.herts.sch.uk or on 01727 754102 for further details of the post.

Excellence, Character and Respect

Verulam is a high achieving boys’ school with a mixed Sixth Form, which forms part of the highly successful BeauSandVer consortium.

The school has good GCSE and A Level results and achieved an above average Progress 8 score of +0.22 in 2019.  Results in 2020 were excellent with 84% of students achieving a Grade 4 or higher in English and Maths.  At A Level, students achieved an average Grade of B-.  Sixth Form students move onto prestigious university places and high level apprenticeships.  Verulam was judged to be a Good school in all categories by Ofsted in October 2018.

Verulam School is a member of the Alban Academies Trust, together with Sandringham and Ridgeway schools. We work in a multi-academy trust to share best practice, deliver joint training, promote the highest of expectations and raise achievement for all students. The AAT motto is ‘Educational Excellence for Everyone’. The Trust offers significant opportunities for career development of staff at all levels within our organisation.

As part of the AAT we offer an enhanced induction programme for all our NQTs.  This programme starts at the beginning of July with our 3 week summer induction programme, which attracts an attendance payment of £2,000 and a contract on the main pay scale from 1st September.  Support is provided by subject and senior leader mentors and we offer subject specific as well as general training through the Alban Teaching School Alliance and Herts for Learning events.

All our teaching staff are provided with a laptop and as our own admitting authority, our admissions criteria now includes a children of staff rule.

In 2020, we introduced a Bring Your Own Device scheme to Years 7 and 12 to enable us to deliver a blended learning environment with every student able to use their own device in the classroom.  This programme will roll out across all year groups.

Our Sixth Form is part of the BeauSandVer Consortium that provides high-quality post-16 education across Beaumont, Sandringham and Verulam Schools.

Verulam places great emphasis on engagement in extra-curricular activities, drama, music and sport.  Outdoor education is also popular with high levels of participation in the Duke of Edinburgh Award Scheme.

Verulam School is committed to safeguarding and promoting the welfare of children and young people and expects all staff and volunteers to share this commitment.

Informal visits to the school are strongly encouraged.
