Job overview

The primary role of a Head of House at St Mary’s is to oversee the academic and pastoral care of all the pupils in their House; it is a role vital in creating an environment in which pupils can realise their full potential. Heads of House are senior members of staff and, as such, they work closely with the Pastoral Deputy Headmistress to ensure that all Houses are run according to the same principles and in a mutually supportive manner.

The successful candidate will show a proven commitment to the pastoral and academic experience of the pupils in their care. They will very much enjoy looking after young people and will demonstrate a keen interest in their development and wellbeing. They will have excellent judgment and communication skills and be very well-organised and efficient. They will be able to lead a team as well as being a team player. We are looking for a person with vision, drive, energy and emotional intelligence.

An essential requirement of the post is to live on site and suitable family accommodation is offered. The successful candidate will be a well-qualified and experienced teacher who will teach a reduced timetable not in excess of 50% of a full-time classroom teacher’s timetable. Any subject will be considered. It is desirable but not essential that applicants should be Roman Catholic; all staff are expected to be sympathetic to the religious character of the school.

St Mary’s has its own generous salary scale.

A letter of application addressed to Mrs Danuta Staunton, Headmistress, a completed application form and the names, addresses and telephone numbers of three referees should be sent by Monday 1 November 2021.

First interviews will be held at the school on Monday 8 November.

St Mary's School Ascot is a leading Roman Catholic girls' boarding school set in 55 acres of beautiful grounds in the heart of Berkshire. We are a friendly, stable and caring community, proud of our academic and sporting achievements and dedicated to bringing out the full potential of each of our 390 pupils. There are 120 pupils in the sixth form. We are committed to full boarding, with spaces for a few day pupils living nearby. We offer a stimulating range of co-curricular activities which take place in the evenings and throughout the weekend.

St Mary’s has a strong reputation as an academic school within the Catholic tradition. Entry to the school is selective. All pupils are expected to take 9 or 10 GCSEs, and almost all stay on for the Sixth Form to pursue their A Levels. Our leavers invariably go on to higher education, the vast majority to Russell Group universities or similar, including 10-15% to Oxbridge.
