This international school in Chile is seeking a Head of Houses and English Teacher to start on August 31st 2018. The successful candidate would coordinate the House activities and events and work with the 4 House Masters in Secondary and 4 House Masters in Primary.
They will report to the Deputy Head Pastoral.

The school

The school was founded in 1942 and throughout the years has built its reputation for excellence on a foundation of developing the whole child alongside exceptional academics although they are proud that St Johns is a non-selective school. The “St John's Experience,” as they like to call it, brings out the very best in their students, enabling them to grow, thrive and develop. More than half of their graduates leave the school with the International Baccalaureate diploma and all are prepared for the Chilean PSU. The graduates are well prepared for university and beyond.

The Role

The Pastoral care of students lies within the responsibility with the Heads and tutors of the respective areas of the school (Senior, Middle, Junior and Infants). The Head of House is a senior staff member who has significant responsibilities and is part of the Co-curricular leadership team of the school. This is a new post to strengthen the House system of the school.

Teaching Commitment: 59% Timetable (Years 10-11 IGCSE: Year 12-13 IB English)

Head of Houses is responsible for the management and leadership of our 4 Houses, Drake, Darwin, Shackleton and Cochrane. Each House has 76 years of history and undertakes a programme of competitive co-curricular activities each year. The new Head of House will look to develop the House system further to reinforce our pastoral care, extend student opportunity and participation whilst also creating a strong House identity and presence within the school.

The Person

The Head of Houses will:

  • Have experience in the British House system and most likely a current House Master
  • Experienced in leading a small team in either middle or senior management
  • Energetic and enthusiastic
  • Resilient, with the ability to work well under pressure and manage time effectively
  • Is a Secondary trained teacher who can teach IB level English each week
  • A firm believer in the value of participation
  • Someone who enjoys both working collaboratively and the challenges of leading a small and dynamic team
  • Respectful of the value that the different experiences, ideas and backgrounds others  can bring to work and to teams

Primary Objectives:

  • To accept overall responsibility for the organization and function of St John´s House  system, under the guidance of the Vice Rector, Pastoral and alongside the Heads of Senior, Middle, Junior and Infant School.
  • To foster and support the development of Sport and the Performing Arts within the  school, working with the respective Heads of Departments.
  • To line manage and meet biweekly with the 4 Senior School House Masters and 4  Middle/Junior School Housemasters.
  • To hold monthly House Leadership meetings that bring together the team and relevant members of the staff.
  • To oversee the School Council and its respective constituent House Councils.
  • To oversee the coordination of House Captains and Vice Captains, as well as their appointments.
  • To coordinate the House points system and develop the rewards and sanctions of students, based upon a House model
  • To coordinate House prefects and their appointments
  • To encourage staff participation and their House membership/identity
  • To foster a caring and supportive environment in the House and the School strengthening the House system and involving tutors.
  • To enforce the correct wearing of uniform through House Masters and House Captains.
  • To carry our House administration including, but not limited to, budgets and reporting.

St John’s was established in 1942 to serve the British community in and around Concepción. It is now a non selective private school of 1350 students from 3-18 years. The Primary school has a 3 form entry with over 460 pupils.  Students are offered a bilingual education with over 80% of the curriculum taught in English.  The core curriculum is based on the Programmes of the Chilean National Curriculum with a more international education, particularly in Mathematics and English.  The Junior School believes in a holistic approach to teaching, looking at the well being of the whole child.
