Job overview

Tes are seeking to appoint an enthusiastic and inspirational Head of Humanities on a full-time permanent basis from September 2021.

This is an exciting opportunity to join a prestigious and heavily over-subscribed Catholic IAPS preparatory school in the heart of Hampstead.  It is Roman Catholic but welcomes boys of other faiths. The majority of boys transfer to leading Independent schools.  It was founded by Richard Patton during the Victorian period in Eastbourne.

As part of a renown group of schools, they offer rewarding careers. Their teachers are passionate about education and have a desire for personal development. Teaching and learning takes place in a climate of trust and openness, where collaboration is the preferred way of working and staff are expected to lead by example. Right through the organisation, investment in training and the development of the individual are high priorities.

The Head of Humanities will oversee the delivery of all subject areas within the Faculty from Reception to Year 8, reporting directly to the Deputy Head, Academic. This is a new senior middle-management position with oversight and responsibility for the teaching and learning of History, Geography and RS throughout the school. Candidates will have an excellent track record in preparing pupils for 13+ or other public examinations. They should be able to teach at least two (ideally three) of the subjects taught within the Faculty and show a willingness to acquire knowledge and skills. There is plenty of scope for the post-holder to shape curriculum provision within the Humanities and to decide how best to teach the three subjects from Reception up to Year 8.

The post-holder, most likely, will teach two or three Humanities subjects to boys in Year 6, 7 and 8 although they may be deployed to teach lessons in any year group. Having said that, most humanities lessons from Reception to Year 6 will be taught by class teachers according to schemes of work set out by the Head of Humanities. The Head of Faculty will ensure class teachers are appropriately supported and line-managed in the delivery of Faculty subjects which will include lesson observations, CPD and the standardisation of assessment and reporting.

The successful candidate will have:

  • A vision for developing the Humanities provision from Reception to Year 8;
  • The experience of teaching at least two of the Humanities subjects (Religious Studies, Geography and History);
  • Experience of high-quality classroom practice including the planning and delivery of impactful lessons and quality written feedback;
  • The experience of identifying where there is need for change and implementing this successfully;
  • An excellent communicator with strong organisational skills with the ability to coordinate the delivery of a curriculum across varying Key Stages

School Benefits:

  • Employee Health Assistance Programme. This is a confidential employee benefit which is available to all staff.  It is designed to help you deal with personal and professional problems that could be affecting your home life or work life, health and general wellbeing.
  • Discounted School Fees. All permanent staff will qualify for 50% discount on school fees for their children in Reception class or above, nurseries and colleges (for day pupils) where we have places. Part time staff will have their school fees adjusted proportionate to their part time hours.
  • Group Pension Scheme
  • Cycle to Work Scheme
  • Season Ticket Loan
