Job overview

Head of Junior School Boys’ Sport

Royal Russell is an HMC/IAPS co-educational school with over 1000 pupils between the ages of 3 and 18, situated on a beautiful green campus of 110 acres in the Shirley Hills near Croydon on the doorstep of London. Our pupils, parents and staff experience a warm and friendly environment with strong pastoral care for every pupil alongside a comprehensive co-curricular and enrichment programme. We aim to build on this alongside improving academic success to continue to be the family school of choice in South London. In March 2016 the Independent Schools Inspectorate (ISI) judged the school as ‘excellent’ in all areas and in October 2018 we successfully passed a full ISI compliance inspection

Sport at Royal Russell has progressed significantly in recent years. The clear vision for sport, alongside a carefully designed long-term athlete development model, ensures a smooth transition and unique continuity from Year 3 to 13. Tailor made programmes for teams and individuals are delivered by our highly qualified teachers and specialist coaches. The mass participated sports are Hockey, Football, Netball, Cricket, Rounders and Tennis, these are delivered in our games programme and extensive co-curricular activities. The rest of the curriculum is delivered in PE lessons that are designed to offer a wide variety of sports, skills and techniques. These lessons also give pupils the knowledge and understanding of fitness and health, which we believe are essential for their wellbeing, during school and beyond.

You will work alongside the current Head of Girls’ Sport and as part of the whole school (3-18) department that is overseen by The Director of Sport. The department consists of eight full time teachers, six post-graduate students and a team of specialist, highly qualified coaches who deliver the programme for sport. We are seeking a forward thinking individual who shares the same vision and passion as the school, to deliver an outstanding programme for all abilities.

  • Are you looking to be part of a highly qualified and motivated department with access to outstanding onsite facilities?
  • Do you want to further enhance the sporting provision for Boys at this successful school and build on the local and national success that is part of the school culture?
  • Do you have a desire to work with motivated pupils in a forward thinking and developing department?
  • Do you have a willingness to contribute to the co-curricular programme and support the pastoral life of our school?

If you can answer yes to all of the above then we look forward to hearing from you.

You should be a qualified and experienced Teacher of Sport with outstanding knowledge of the PE curriculum at KS 1 and 2 who wishes to inspire pupils with the desire to participate in and enjoy sport at all levels. Ideally you should have National Governing Body Coaching and Officiating qualifications. This role could suit someone seeking their first leadership role who can demonstrate enthusiasm, dynamism, teamwork and dedication, together with a strong focus on excellent teaching and results in Sport programmes in all year groups. If you are ambitious to take on the opportunity of leading this growing department by building on the foundations already in place, you may be the right candidate for us.

Our exceptional on-site facilities include 6 full size grass football pitches, a floodlit astro hockey pitch, 2 further floodlit all-weather games areas for Netball and Tennis. We also have a large well equipped sports hall for Trampolining, Basketball and Table Tennis, a gymnasium and a 25m indoor swimming pool. A challenging cross-country course winds its way through our extensive grounds. The school also has full planning permission to build a floodlit 4G football astroturf.

This exciting opportunity offers excellent benefits including a competitive salary above the SNS scale which rewards staff in line with their qualifications and experience, with additional allowances for specific pastoral and academic responsibilities and a market rate for recruitment. In addition, you will work with a team of dedicated, supportive and friendly staff in our beautiful green parkland estate with easy access to transport links and free car parking, receive free meals, a discount on School fees, the use of our sporting and gym facilities together with the opportunity to be part of the vibrant community of the historic Royal Russell School. Full details of our staff benefits and recruitment procedures can be found on our School recruitment page at https://www.royalrussell.co.uk/vacancies

Applications will be considered on receipt and should arrive no later than 12 noon on Monday 1 April 2019. Interviews will be held later that week. If you have not heard from us by Friday 5 April 2019 you should presume that you have not been successful on this occasion.

The School is committed to safeguarding and promoting the welfare of children. All appointments are subject to a satisfactory enhanced Disclosure and Barring Service check (including a check against the Children’s Barred List) and other pre-employment screening including references and medical fitness.
