Job overview

St Mary’s School, Cambridge is an independent day and boarding school for girls aged 3 to 18.

Situated in the heart of the academically and culturally vibrant city of Cambridge, we are a school where any girl can thrive and achieve academic excellence. A Christian school run in the Catholic tradition and founded on the principles of Mary Ward, we have a unique approach to education and an atmosphere which fosters a love of life and learning.

This is an exciting time to join our Junior School. The school is thriving as a result of bold ambition in recent years. In Summer 2022 we achieved outstanding outcomes in every aspect of our Compliance and Education Quality Independent Schools Inspectorate inspections and in our Diocesan inspection and gained re-accreditation as a World Class High Performance Learning School.

It is a leading STEM school having worked closely with the Royal Academy of Engineering and the University of Cambridge to promote girls in STEM and realise outstanding international success in coding. The Junior School formally opened new STEM teaching facilities in 2022.

Our plans also included the introduction of early years learning and in 2021 we established a new pre-school.

The school’s ambitious plans will continue (within the whole school’s development plan). We have advanced plans to open overseas schools from 2024/5 including a premium quality Primary School. The Senior Leadership Team at Cambridge will have a key role to play in development of the curriculum, policies and staffing for these new ventures, and the successful candidate should demonstrate a good understanding of, and enthusiasm for, this exciting aspect of St Mary’s ambitions.

The new postholder will promote and develop the highest standards across every facet of the school with a focus on performance and happiness and facilitate the smooth transition of pupils into the Senior School.  It will be the incoming Head who would see these plans to fruition and ensure they are a success.

Closing date for applications: 9.00am on Monday, 30th January 2023.

Interviews to be held on Friday 3rd February (longlist candidates) and Monday 6th February (shortlist) candidates.

We will review applications on receipt. Suitable candidates may be interviewed before the closing date and we reserve the right to withdraw the position if an early appointment is made.

The School is an equal opportunities employer. We are committed to safeguarding and promoting the welfare of children and young people and expect all staff and volunteers to share this commitment. Successful applicants are subject to an enhanced DBS check.
