King Alfred’s Academy is a highly successful school; it is steeped in history and dates back to 1597 (1844 students on roll, including 320 in the Sixth Form). Situated in Wantage, at the heart of the Vale of the White Horse, drawing students from a large catchment area in the ancient town of Wantage, birthplace of King Alfred the Great in 849, the school nestles below the North Wessex Downs Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty, 17 miles south of the university city of Oxford, and 6 miles from the internationally renowned Harwell campus. The Bronze Age monument of the White Horse lies 4 miles to the west on the oldest highway in Britain – the Ridgeway.
King Alfred’s is one of the largest secondary schools in Oxfordshire with a strong academic history, combining ancient listed buildings with recent capital investment totaling £20 million. The Academy has recently been reorganised from three sites to two sites. This has enabled very significant investment in the two remaining sites. Facilities for students and staff are excellent and include: A new purpose built science block, a new dining and teaching block, a new sports hall (completed January 2019), refurbishment of Creative Arts, refurbishment of other teaching areas (complete autumn 2018) and expansion of sixth form Centre (due to be complete during 2019).
King Alfred’s is in the heart of the local community and has very strong links across many partners in the locality, and particularly with the primary schools with which we jointly form the Vale Academy Trust (VAT). We consistently achieve highly at GCSE and A Level, and we are also proud of the excellent achievements with our Level 3 vocational qualifications. As a school we continually seek to improve the educational experience for students and reflect upon the responsibility we have as a local employer. At King Alfred’s we are passionate about learning both within and beyond the classroom; enrichment of educational experience is central to our ethos. We are committed to teacher training, the CPD and career development of our staff.
