Job overview

We require a Key Stage 1 specialist teacher and leader to join Lodge, our Pre-Prep. This is a new role, responsible for leading and monitoring the standards of teaching, learning and pastoral care across Year 1 (Kindergarten) and Year 2 (Transition). The Head of Key Stage 1 is an exciting opportunity to bring experience and a fresh perspective to an established Pre-Prep Department.

Godstowe is a thriving, busy school enjoying a famous reputation in its field. Approximately a third of our pupils are boarders. The School prepares children for entry, mostly at 13+ but some at 11+, into the leading independent senior schools. The School prides itself in academic excellence, whilst being non- selective at entry. For over 120 years, Godstowe girls have achieved outstanding results. Many have competed successfully for scholarships and awards at prestigious Senior Schools and have represented the School at local and national competitions. At the same time the School provides excellent pastoral care, to ensure that pupils flourish in line with our ethos of encouraging them to be confident, happy and successful.

For girls and boys aged 4 - 7, Lodge aims to give each girl and boy the very best possible start to their school life within a happy and secure environment. Lodge is in a separate building on the main school site but an integral part of the whole school.

The post holder will teach a Year 2 class and manage three other teachers and the equivalent of two full-time teaching assistants. Close liaison with the Heads of Early Years, Lower and Upper School and parents will be an important part of the role.

Something Special is happening at Godstowe

Godstowe was founded by two strong, progressive women, originally in fact as a school whose purpose would be to prepare girls for the move down the hill to Wycombe Abbey School. Their vision was for an innovative, academic and broad education for girls and, without a doubt, this continues to live on in today’s school.

Our ethos is simple. All we want is for our girls and boys to be Confident, Happy and Successful. Indeed, if the first two are true, the third will almost certainly follow. Success is defined in many ways, and we mean successful in the broadest sense: successfully kind, successfully courteous as well as successful in achieving a wide range of goals. We keep our pupils busy and engaged, we entertain and intrigue them, encourage them, and excite them. Happy children are easy to teach.

With outstanding, highly qualified teaching staff as well as a strong and experienced pastoral team, excellent facilities, wonderful surroundings, a non-selective intake policy and a more positive, exuberant and industrious atmosphere than you will find in other schools, it is likely that most of our children will be happy to learn, happy to stretch themselves, happy to support each other, and happy to do whatever they can to take an active part in their own education. Why push children through the curriculum when they can be inspired to make their own journey, choose their own routes and arrive at their destination under their own steam?

Our pupils love their time at school. It never ceases to amaze me just how much highly motivated and enthusiastic people can willingly contribute, and we don’t just mean the girls and boys, we mean the staff and the parents too! Godstowe is alive with opportunity. Remember, to learn a lesson you need to live it.
