A superb opportunity for an inspirational graduate to lead the teaching of Mandarin and play a key role in our diverse Modern Languages Department.

Using your skills and experience in teaching Mandarin you will teach at all levels from Year 9 to Sixth Form, promoting cultural awareness and developing pupil’s communication skills. Mandarin is being studied by an increasing number of Uppinghamians and there is much for a new head of department to build on. Learning Mandarin takes on even more importance to our pupils now that Uppingham has committed to opening schools in China during the course of the next six years.

The successful candidate will be responsible for teaching Mandarin at all levels, catering for beginners as well as pupils with some prior experience of the language. 

Facilities for our committed team of 13 specialists in the purpose-built Language Centre are superb and our exciting Modern Languages Department has a wide extra-curricular programme. This includes social evenings, exchanges, study visits and visiting speakers from international business and overseas institutions, all with the aim of emphasising languages in the real world.

If you are a strong, dynamic character with excellent knowledge of Mandarin, a good honours degree, effective classroom management skills and an ability to build appropriate rapport with pupils we would be delighted to hear from you.

Uppingham School is a mixed, Church of England independent secondary school with sixth form and boarding, located in Leicestershire. The secondary school, situated in Uppingham has approximately 791 students on record.

Uppingham School was founded in 1584, originally as a school for boys. In 1975 girls were admitted, and it became fully co-educational as of 2001. The majority of students attending the secondary school are boarders.

Work is generally presented neatly and pupils’ note-taking is effective. They develop good numeracy skills and their capacity to think critically is notable. Creative abilities are well developed and their exploration of ideas is particularly marked in their enrichment activities. Pupils’ study habits are good. In the lessons observed, pupils worked very well with each other, and also worked well independently. They enjoy their work and this stems in part from the good-natured atmosphere in lessons. Pupils use information and communications technology (ICT) proficiently.”
