Job overview

Whitgift is one of Britain’s leading independent day and boarding schools, set in an attractive 48-acre parkland site in South Croydon enjoying excellent links to London, Surrey and the south coast. We are proud to be able to offer:

  • A unique, tailor-made education for boys aged 10-18.
  • Beautiful and historic parkland site with outstanding facilities.
  • A record of outstanding academic achievement.
  • Superb facilities for over 40 sports, an exciting performing arts programme and wide range of co-curricular activities.
  • Excellent pastoral care.

An inspirational and committed Teacher of Mathematics is required to lead a highly successful, dynamic and innovative department at an exciting moment in the school’s evolution. Whitgift has mapped out a clear vision of where the School wants to be by 2025 in which the academic and intellectual development of the pupils is the top curricular priority. A number of initiatives are already under way throughout the school to develop the key areas of independent project work, collaborative working, digital literacy and life-long learning. Underpinning the Whitgift vision is a commitment to global citizenship and social responsibility, combined with the explicit promotion of diversity and inclusion in all areas of school life.

Head of Mathematics is one of the principal academic posts in the School. The position reports to the Deputy Head, Academic. The Heads of Mathematics, English, Science and Modern Foreign Languages meet together fortnightly with the Academic Deputy Head and also sit on the Curriculum Committee which discusses all matters relating to the Academic Life of the School. The Head of Department thus has ample opportunity to help shape the future academic direction of the school. Mathematics is by far the largest single subject studied in the Sixth Form and achievement in Mathematics is key to university success across the STEM subjects.

Complementing this vision and ambition, the successful candidate will have a proven track record of outstanding teaching, as well as the management skills to get the best out of a large department. The position would suit either an experienced Head of Department looking to lead a larger department or someone looking to take on their first management role.

Knowledge or experience of the IB curriculum will be an advantage, but not a prerequisite for the post.

We welcome applications from all parts of our community as we aspire to attract staff that matches the social and cultural diversity of our student intake.

Whitgift School (part of the Whitgift Foundation) is committed to safeguarding and promoting the welfare of young people and vulnerable adults and expects all staff and volunteers to share this commitment.
