Job overview

This opportunity is being advertised following a large increase in the number of students choosing to study MFL at KS4 & KS5 and as part of our commitment to MFL subjects becoming part of the ‘core curriculum’ here at DCHS. We recognise the place of MFL in a 2024 school curriculum is stronger than ever. The successful candidate will be a teacher who is passionate about their subject, is an excellent practitioner and is committed to bringing out the best in our students. This post is suitable for candidates with all levels of experience. The post will suit Spanish or French teachers.

We are two departments of 4 teachers. We deliver a KS3 curriculum which has been developed by staff in school. We deliver French and Spanish in all key stages in school, and are ambitious in our expansion of numbers over the next few years. We offer extra-curricular activities to local restaurants and further afield to France and Spain throughout the year.

We believe that our curriculum is designed with a linguist at the centre. The department consists of a supportive team who continue to improve and increase numbers year on year. The department has access to their own classrooms and resources are shared between all staff in the department and are regularly reviewed. The schemes of learning have developed over the past five years with a revamped KS3, KS4 and KS5 curriculum ready for delivery. We are keen to continue to develop this further to meet the needs of all students. We believe in evidence informed teaching and links to research informed practice.

As a member of the department, you would benefit from your own classroom with minimal movement around the building, a supportive team, access to a good teacher education programme as well as many extra curricular opportunities.

MFL sits within the Humanities faculty in school and is well supported. This role will directly report to the Head of Humanities and will also line manage the Head of French.

Further details of this post and an application form are available on our website: www.dchs-alnwick.org.

Further questions or a virtual discussion or visit can be arranged by emailing the school at admin@dchs-alnwick.uk.

Closing date: 9.00am, Monday 20th May 2024

Interviews are planned for Wednesday 22nd May 2024.

We are strongly committed to safeguarding and promoting the welfare of all children and young people and expect all staff to share this commitment. This post is exempt from the Rehabilitation of Offenders Act 1974. If you are invited for interview, you will be required to disclose convictions that would not be filtered prior to the date of the interview. Certain spent convictions and cautions will be ‘protected’ and do not need to be disclosed. Full details on protected convictions and information about which convictions must be declared during job applications can be found on the Ministry of Justice website. You will be asked for further information about your criminal history during the recruitment process.

If your application is successful, this self-disclosure information will be checked against information from the Disclosure and Barring Service before your appointment is confirmed. This role will include Regulated Activities, and an Enhanced Disclosure and Barring Service (DBS) disclosure is required for this post. An online check will also be carried out on the successful candidate.

About The Duchess's Community High School

We are thrilled that you are interested in joining the team here at DCHS. We took over as Co-Heads in January 2021 with an aim of DCHS being an educational centre of excellence based on the principle that effective

relationships are the key to positive outcomes. We believe that first and foremost we as teachers are here to  provide high quality teaching and support to students within our care, and in doing so we will create a place where students want to be.

We are looking for team players who have a student centred approach as well as a desire to be part of a robust teacher education programme. We have a considerate approach to staff workload and are committed  to investing in staff to help them progress through their own career, and in doing so create a place where staff want to work.

We are passionate that the term ‘community’ within our title is significant and cannot be undersold or underplayed. We believe that every member of staff at DCHS should leave the community in a better position than the point they arrived here and ask that, if you are to join us, you share this belief. We believe that at DCHS, community works.

We have included everything we feel is important to share in the recruitment packs and we welcome requests from anyone interested in these positions to contact us to visit in person, meet over a video call or chat on the phone about these opportunities.
