Job overview

About you

We are seeking an experienced, dynamic and well-qualified specialist graduate teacher who can teach throughout Key Stages 3 & 4 and possess the experience to lead our Modern Foreign Languages Department. To be successful, you will have excellent communication and management skills, a strong commitment to team work and the ability to maintain productive relationships with staff and pupils.

Able to excite and challenge young people, you will be able to demonstrate excellence in teaching and learning and will be expected to contribute to school improvement, whilst making a full contribution to the Guernsey Federation of Secondary Schools.

About the Education Service

The three island 11-16 High Schools, the Guernsey Grammar School & Sixth Form Centre (11-18), and St Anne’s School in Alderney are embarking on a federated model of Federation working led by the Director of Education.

The drivers in Secondary phase education for this visionary change are: equality of educational experience and outcomes, equality of opportunity and access, and efficient and effective use of resources.

Employed by the States of Guernsey and based at St Sampson’s High School, you will be required to maximise opportunities for collaborative working, teaching and learning across Key Stages and shared professional development across schools. There is an expectation that you will engage in cross-school initiatives which may require working on more than one site to meet the needs of the States of Guernsey.

Benefits

This is an excellent opportunity to lead our MFL Department which is well-resourced with its own rooms. Furthermore, you will have the opportunity to make a difference to the lives of young people as you help each pupil reach their full potential.

This post carries a three-year employment permit. If appointed, you can expect to:

  • Benefit from the stunning scenery and enviable quality of life;
  • Work in a well-resourced school that follows an innovative Bailiwick curriculum based on the English National Curriculum and which has favourable PTRs;
  • Be part of a leading development of ICT in education and be allocated a personal laptop;

Values and vision

St Sampson's High School aims to help motivate students by raising their expectations. Students are often encouraged to work effectively with each other in  small group collaborative tasks and to be respectful of each other’s views and contributions. The school aims for students to make a significant contribution to their wider community through, for example, participation in sponsored events to raise school funds, support for local senior citizens’ care homes, raising funds for international disaster relief efforts and through acting as buddies and mentors for their junior peers. Importance is also placed on providing a broad range of activities and experiences planned beyond the classroom which enrich pupils’ learning. This is why the school prides itself on having strong links with local sports clubs in rugby, cricket, athletics and football with competitive school fixtures across a number of sports for both girls and boys at all stages. The school also looks to extend pupils’ experiences beyond the school through off-site visits to other facilities and centres within Guernsey (such as Footes Lane for athletics) and international visits beyond Guernsey (such as to France and Italy).
