Job overview

The Trustees of Newport Girls' High School Academy Trust are delighted to invite applications for the position of Head of Languages at this outstanding (2019) girls' school. NGHS places huge emphasis on staff well-being and is a DFE Flexible Working Ambassador School. NGHS is still a small-medium sized school, but the school roll is growing rapidly and our new extension (dining room and STEM-subject classrooms) has just been opened.

Our ideal candidate will teach French to A-level with German to KS3 (or GCSE). In both languages students average Grade 7 with a large number of Grade 8-9s seen across all classes.  At A-level students routinely attain 100% A*-B in both French and German. The AQA board is currently the board of choice at NGHS.

The faculty has a suite of rooms in a new extension (2018). All are equipped with the latest technology including interactive TVs and sound systems.

This post is a full-time permanent position starting on 1 September 2022.

The new post holder will be supported fully by an experienced and high-profile SLT as well benefitting from being part of a fantastic team of colleagues, both teaching and non-teaching.  The ability to relate well to our students is essential. Our students are very well behaved but can put pressure on themselves to achieve and they can also have lots of questions for their teachers! Working at NGHS is academically demanding and stimulating but staff can normally teach without any disciplinary interruption.

If you have any questions about the post, please contact the Headteacher, Michael Scott via headteacher@nghs.org.uk. An in-person or virtual tour of the school  is available on our website and a discussion via Teams with Mr Scott is possible prior to application.

Please apply by the closing date of Wednesday 25 May at 9am. We intend to review applications as they arrive to draw up a shortlist for Friday 27 May, so please apply promptly.

NGHS is committed to Safer Recruitment Practice. A copy of our policy is available for download. An enhanced DBS certificate will be required prior to the commencement of employment. References from your current Headteacher will be verified and police checks required from any countries in which you have lived/worked previously. The School is also committed to equal opportunities and welcomes applications  irrespective of protected characteristics such as age, gender, ethnicity, sexuality, pregnancy etc. NGHS has an ever-increasingly diverse student population with circa 20-25% non white-British student population in the lower years.

In 2019, the School was successful in gaining £2.3m to expand further under the government's Selective Schools Expansion Fund. An additional 30 pupils per year joined the school at Year 7 from September 2021 and an ambitious building programme (dining room, kitchen, science laboratory, computer suite and four classrooms) opened in January 2022.

The school’s sixth form is also open to students from other local schools. Newport Girls' High School converted to an academy in 2012 and operates under its own trust.

Values and vision

Newport Girls' High School takes great pride in its strong reputation for academic excellence. The secondary school works hard to provide a high-quality curriculum with a broad range of subjects. Teachers also seek to ensure that pupils have a caring and comfortable environment in which to learn.

The school day at Newport runs from 8.50am until 3.45pm in order to make time for daily assemblies and longer breaks. A wide variety of extra-curricular activities is available including sports such as fencing, netball and hockey.

Ofsted report (November 2022)

"Leaders and teachers are highly ambitious for all pupils throughout the school, especially those with special educational needs and/or disabilities (SEND). They make sure that the most important knowledge and skills in each subject are taught in the most effective sequence."

"Pupils rapidly develop the exceptionally positive learning behaviours expected by leaders and teachers. There is no disruption of lessons."
