Job overview

We are seeking to appoint an enthusiastic, ambitious and well-qualified graduate to lead the successful Modern Languages Department of 15 full-time teachers, five part-time teachers, 11 Language Assistants and one Department Technician, teaching six languages to (I)GCSE and A level/Pre-U (French, German, Italian, Mandarin Chinese, Russian and Spanish). Each of these languages has its own Head of Language, forming a team led by the Head of Modern Languages. Should the successful candidate be a teacher of Spanish, there may be the opportunity for his or her role to include Head of Spanish.

The successful candidate’s academic credentials will be strong, teaching French and/or Spanish across the age range, through to preparation for elite universities. The Head of Modern Languages will be an outstanding classroom practitioner with the ability to inspire pupils and staff, driven to ensure that the quality of teaching and learning in the department is of the highest calibre. He/she will, in collaboration with the department, create and implement effective strategies to achieve ambitious aims.  A strong leader and a visible presence, the Head of Modern Languages will be fully conversant with the effective use of ICT to improve learning, planning and administration. A commitment to the wider activities of the department, including exchanges, study visits abroad and a programme of extension and enrichment is essential.
