An exciting opportunity has arisen for an enthusiastic Head of Music and Drama to cover a maternity leave at this successful 11-18 girls’ grammar school in Reading. Kendrick School is a centre of academic excellence with a track record of high performance and achievement. Applicants need to be able to teach Music to A Level and Drama to GCSE.

Music plays an important role in the life of Kendrick. Approximately 70% of students learn an instrument privately, at school, or with Berkshire Maestros. Central to the work of everyone in the Music Department is a desire to encourage students to give their very best at whatever level they can achieve. The result is a large number of students involved in musical activities of one kind or another and of a very high quality, culminating in the almost professional standards of some of the most able students.

This position may suit a teacher who has at least two or three years’ experience, has aspirations to lead a department and can be mentored towards this role; or a more experienced teacher ready to take on a key departmental leadership position.

Kendrick School is a welcoming, inclusive and happy community, with students who are engaging, cooperative and eager to learn. Benefits include free car parking, a contributory pension scheme, training and development and use of the swimming pool and sporting facilities.

Judged as ‘Outstanding’ in a November 2022 inspection, Kendrick School is an 11-18 selective girls’ school with academy status and has an impressive record of achievement as a centre of excellence for girls’ education.

There are 904 students on roll, including 294 in the Sixth Form.

OFSTED November 2022: “Pupils and sixth formers are justly proud of their school community. They delight in their learning and truly excel here. One parent spoke for many when reflecting, ‘The school does a great job of creating well-rounded, kind, human beings who will hopefully go on to make the world a better place. The academic results are important of course, but far from the only focus.’ Inspectors totally agree”.

Kendrick is a forward-looking school and grasps the opportunities that present themselves. A love of learning is at the heart of Kendrick with a strong emphasis on high quality teaching. The curriculum is organised to meet the needs of all students and is reviewed regularly. All staff are hardworking and dedicated; students are bright, enthusiastic and curious.

As well as a broad and balanced curriculum at all key stages, students at Kendrick enjoy a rich and varied extracurricular education. The House System provides opportunities for healthy competition with numerous annual house events, which are key activities in the school year. Kendrick Student Leaders work energetically and collaboratively with staff to support this vital community element of the school. In addition, we have a School Council, which discusses and drives change for students.

As part of Kendrick’s Widening Horizons strategic initiative, we actively pursue partnerships with schools and businesses in our local area and beyond. These associations benefit the students of Kendrick, as well as, students in neighbouring schools. We share our good practice and offer opportunities to work with primary and secondary schools in the Reading area. Currently, Kendrick is a hub school in the Science Leadership Partnership and provides support and expertise to other schools in the teaching of science.

Kendrick is going through an expansion process, which started in September 2020 when an additional 32 students joined in Year 7. This will continue for the next two years until September 2024 when the school will have four forms of 32 students in Years 7-11.

The Kendrick pledge is “We, the students, staff and friends of Kendrick School, pledge to uphold the values of friendship, kindness and respect. We promise to stand against prejudice, ignorance and injustice in all its forms, promoting the values of equality, tolerance and justice for all”. As stated in our OFSTED inspection report, ‘these values underpin all that the school achieves’.
