Job overview

The Prep Music Department is led by the Head of Music, who works alongside a Pre-Prep music and two Senior music teachers. There is a Music Administrator, Head of Keyboard and a good number of outstanding Visiting Music Teachers, many of whom are leaders in their field, who provide specialist tuition in a wide range of instruments.

The Prep School building has two music classrooms, 14 music practice rooms, instrument storage space and a music office. There is a theatre for music and drama performances. There is also a Performing Arts Centre that can be used by all students and teachers in the school.

There are regular music concerts throughout the year as well as other events such as annual year group musicals, music assemblies, a traditional carol service and a ‘House’ Music Competition. Around 50% of prep school pupils learn a musical instrument, and there are many instrumental ensembles and choirs. Ensembles/choirs mainly practise in break times. Children are entered for ABRSM and Trinity Music exams, for which the Head of Music is often the accompanist. Each class has one class music lesson per week, with the exception of Year 4 who have two lessons. Lessons are 35 minutes long.

The successful applicant will lead the Prep Music, and will liaise closely with the Head of Music in the Senior School. In addition to playing the piano, the ability to play an orchestral instrument to a high standard would be an advantage.
