Role Description

The Head of Pastoral Care plays a crucial role in ensuring the holistic well-being and development of students within the school community. Reporting directly to the Academic Director, this position encompasses a range of responsibilities aimed at providing comprehensive support and guidance to students, staff, and parents.

Role responsibilities

  • Overseeing all aspects of pastoral care for students, ensuring their emotional, social, and academic needs are met effectively.
  • Implementing and maintaining child protection, safeguarding, welfare, and safety protocols, including handling external referrals and providing ongoing training for staff.
  • Managing school discipline, conduct, rules, and policies, and ensuring compliance with relevant regulations.
  • Supervising the school psychologist and Special Education Needs (SEN) committee, as well as directly overseeing the functions of the Tutor's team.
  • Leading and managing communication with parents and students through the Tutors’ Team, addressing individual concerns and attending parents’ meetings.
  • Informing relevant stakeholders, including Tutors, the Deputy Director, and the Academic Director, about student issues and ensuring consistent application of school policies.
  • Chairing pastoral and welfare meetings, maintaining accurate records, and ensuring effective communication of information to all stakeholders.
  • Playing a key role in the induction of new students, providing support and guidance to facilitate their transition into the school community.
  • Promoting awareness of Codes of Conduct among staff and students and implementing initiatives to enhance the school environment.
  • Contributing to staff development policies by providing professional advice, support, and identifying training needs.
  • Monitoring and evaluating student behaviour and conduct, implementing behavioural management strategies, and setting clear expectations for improvement.
  • Leading by example as a teacher and manager, maintaining high standards of behaviour, discipline, and motivation.
  • Supporting staff in the development and implementation of behavioural management initiatives.
  • Participating fully in school life by actively engaging in and supporting school events and activities.

Qualifications

  • Passionate about delivering outstanding pastoral care.
  • Minimum 3 years of experience in a related role, with a Master’s Degree in a relevant field (e.g., pedagogy, psychology, social sciences).
  • Preferably holds a valid First Aid Certificate, lifeguard, or sports coaching qualification.
  • Experience in counselling or mentoring young individuals.
  • Strong communication skills with demonstrated organisational abilities.
  • Compassionate and confident demeanour.
  • Resilient and solution-focused.
  • Enthusiastic team player and leader with an excellent work ethic.
