The Gower School are looking to appoint a highly motivated, dedicated and enthusiastic Head of Sports to complement our strong teaching team for our expanding primary school and nursery.

 This is a permanent, full time position which starts in September 2022.

The Head of PE and Sport has responsibility for all sports at the primary school and nursery. They will lead our team of sports staff and coaches to develop sporting excellence and encourage participation of pupils of all abilities. They will also be responsible for the planning and future growth of sport within the curriculum at The Gower School and for sports outside of the curriculum.


Job Description

The key responsibilities are:

• Adhering to the policies of the school, in particular policies relating to the safeguarding of children.

• Develop and maintain a clear strategic plan for the Sports department including curricular and academic physical education as well as co-curricular sports and clubs.

• Work in close collaboration with the Nursery staff team. Create, develop and deliver a programme for our Nursery children.    

• Be an inspirational and dynamic leader, build an effective team of teachers and coaches.

• Manage a well-balanced competitive fixture programme and ensure the team selection process is fair. 

• Work in close collaboration with the teachers and sports coaches ensuring that the department is fully aware of expectations. 

• Promote good sportsmanship and conduct for both staff and pupils across all aspects of sport.

• Be prepared to represent The Gower School at relevant association conferences and meetings.

• Liaising with the SENCo and class teachers regarding children with additional needs and adaptations that need to be made during PE lessons.

• Delivering weekly small group occupational therapy sessions for targeted pupils.

• Organise and run annual Sports Day, annual Swimming Gala, annual sports activities days

• Participate in weekly school assemblies, and promote sports, sportsmanship and growth mindset approach when presenting at assembly.


Working hours:

Monday to Friday, 40 hours a week – Term Time 


Person specification:

Our ideal candidate will be sensitive, flexible, talented and passionate with a good team spirit, ability to lead and inspire, and will have outstanding teaching practice. You will hold a Degree and UK Qualified Teacher Status including evidence of appropriate subsequent in service training. Three years teaching experience would be desirable, and knowledge, passion and experience of a range of team sports. You will also be FA qualified and hold an ASA qualification (desired).
