Job overview

We are seeking to appoint an inspirational and dynamic head of our highly successful and well-resourced Physical Education department. We are looking for a candidate who is ambitious, creative and both a highly effective practitioner and leader. A successful background in netball, hockey and gymnastics is essential. We have excellent facilities, including an all-weather pitch, extensive playing fields and a separate ‘pavilion’ with changing facilities and a teaching space.

Kirkburton Middle School is a highly popular, oversubscribed and ambitious school with 516 pupils on roll.  Pupils are aged 10 to 13 (years 6, 7 and 8).  The school is approximately six miles outside Huddersfield, in a semi-rural village setting, and is easily accessed by road from towns and cities in West and South Yorkshire. Academic standards at the end of Year 8 are above average and there is a thriving programme of extra-curricular activities. The ethos of the school is a particular strength: welcoming, harmonious, inclusive and mutually supportive. Relationships between all members of the school community are excellent.

PE is one of the school’s strongest departments and has an excellent reputation for student outcomes. Furthermore, the department is at the forefront of developing Learning & Teaching within the school and delivers a high quality extra-curricular programme across all year groups. The successful candidate will be expected to share the department’s drive, ambition and reflective practice. As well as teaching a range of classes, you will lead your team in shaping the curriculum area’s vision, ensuring short, medium and long term planning is in place and quality assured and in maintaining the department’s already high standards in lessons, clubs and competitions.

The successful candidate can expect:

• A supportive and friendly team of experienced PE teachers with a focus upon improving student outcomes and an established track record of delivering excellent results

• A commitment to their future development through a well-structured CPD programme

• Motivated students who are eager to learn and engage in lessons and extra-curricular clubs and teams

• The chance to work with teachers and middle leaders who are relentless in their drive to deliver the best learning experiences to their students

This is an excellent opportunity for a forward thinking and ambitious teacher to take on a leadership role within a successful team, which values high standards of academic achievement whilst developing the knowledge, skills and qualities needed to help students thrive in life and work.

We are committed to safeguarding and promoting the welfare of children and young people and expect all staff and volunteers to share this commitment. All staff are subject to an enhanced DBS check. A conviction may not exclude candidates from appointment but will be considered as part of the recruitment process.

To discuss the post in more detail or to arrange an informal visit, please contact the school, by phone or email. Application packs are available on the school website. Applicants must include a covering letter (2 sides of A4 maximum) incorporating details of qualities, skills and past experience in direct relation to the role requirements.  Applications should be returned to C Taylor, at the school address or by email to office@kirkburtonmiddleschool.co.uk.

The closing date for receipt of applications is Monday 20th January 2020 at 12pm.  Interviews are expected to take place during the week commencing Monday 27th January 2020.
