Job overview

Required for January 2024 or sooner

Permanent, Full-time

This rarely available vacancy provides the opportunity for a well-qualified, inspirational and experienced teacher of Philosophy, Ethics and Religion (PER) to lead the delivery of outstanding teaching and learning at Abbot’s Hill.

Required from January 2024 or sooner, the Head of PER will oversee a department and a curriculum that speaks to every pupil within the school. An outstanding classroom practitioner, the successful candidate will inspire pupils and colleagues alike with their passion for the subject and will champion their department within and beyond the school. A budding strategic thinker, they will contribute actively to heads of department meetings and to wider discussions about the development of the school and, in due course, they are likely to aspire to a senior leadership role. Effective relationships at all levels are key to this role, as is the ability to lead, manage and coach others so that they fulfil their potential, whether as a pupil or as a teacher.

The candidate must possess a genuine commitment to making a positive contribution to the school, be a proud ambassador for the subject and promote the highest standards of subject teaching amongst the department.

The subject is taught across the school from Year 3 in the Prep school. The Head of Department would liaise closely with the Prep school subject co-ordinator to ensure a seamless transition from Year 6.

Teachers appointed to Abbot’s Hill School are expected to maintain the highest professional standards and to contribute to the co-curricular life of the community. Those who join the School can expect to become part of a caring, purposeful and committed community.

Abbot’s Hill is an all through, inclusive independent day school with the Nursery, Prep and Senior Schools on the same site. We welcome boys and girls in our Nursery and girls from 3-16 years.

Set in 76 acres of rolling Hertfordshire parkland with far reaching views across the Gade Valley, the school benefits from an open, expansive environment in which our pupils learn, explore and play. Pupils flourish here: the surroundings afford a safe-haven for discovery and experimentation while the energy and opportunity of London is only a stone’s throw away.

Founded over 100 years ago to educate young women of character, the school places great value on the development of the individual. Those girls lucky enough to come here will leave as confident, ambitious and creative individuals.

The ISI Inspection in January 2020 acknowledged Abbot’s Hill as ‘excellent’ in both the academic and personal development of the pupils – the highest judgement possible.
