Job overview

The Head of PHSE and careers is responsible for the strategic development as well as for ensuring that the programmes reflect and match the developing needs of pupils, helping to fulfil the pastoral care requirements of the College. The postholder will and provide an up to date and forward looking delivery of regulatory needs such as safeguarding and online safety, the Fundamental British Values and Careers education. 

Taught PHSE and Careers programme

  • Provide leadership to the team of PHSE teachers to ensure the delivery of a high quality taught PHSE programme.
  • Develop and implement  coherent schemes of work for taught PHSE lessons, developing and sharing suitable materials for individual year groups and monitoring its delivery across the College.
  • Liaise with the Heads of Year and the Head of Sixth Form regularly with regard to the content and delivery of the both the taught PHSE programme and the tutorial programme.
  • Monitor pupils’ work and the classroom practice of those in the department to ensure high standards are maintained.
  • Keep up to date with developments in the subject area and education in general to ensure that best practice is adopted within all forms of PHSE and Careers delivery.
  • Liaise with the Deputy Head (Academic) as regards the staffing of the taught PHSE programme 

Tutorials

  • Support the Heads of Year and the Head of Sixth Form in creating a revised and coordinated framework for the tutor periods within which pupils may be nurtured throughout their time at Haileybury.
  • Administer resources for tutor periods, as appropriate, under the direction of the Heads of Year.
  • Coordinate the booking of suitable lectures, arranging follow up sessions with appropriate materials for pupils with the Heads of Year.
  • Distribute suitable briefing materials in response to particular issues to the Heads of Year and tutors for use with tutor groups.
  • Complement the wider work of the College with regard to the personal, health and social education of pupils and to liaise effectively with other relevant members of staff (e.g. Heads of Biology, Theology and Philosophy, the Head of Learning Support and the Resident Medical Officer and the Health Centre).

Regulatory needs

  • Ensure that Haileybury’s PHSE programme fulfils ISI regulatory requirements with the Heads of Year and the Deputy Master.
  • Work with the Head of Sixth Form to develop a whole school strategy for careers education.
  • Work with the DSL and Director of IT to develop a whole school strategy for online safety.
  • Contribute to any review of Haileybury’s counter-bullying policy as required by the Deputy Master.
  • Review all relevant policy documents regularly and update these as appropriate.

Wider role

  • Maintain a visible profile for PHSE by publishing its philosophy and programme on the website and mounting a publicity programme for events throughout the year.
  • Monitor the delivery of the PHSE programme through liaison with the Heads of Year and tutors with efficient mechanisms for seeking feedback from staff and pupils.
  • Evaluate the effectiveness of the PHSE programme by conducting annual reviews in the light of the consultation and feedback process.
  • Be proactive and identify any PHSE training needs for members of staff and seek to arrange appropriate opportunities for such training, whether group or individual.
  • Negotiate and manage the PHSE budget effectively.
  • Undertake other reasonable duties related to the job purpose required from time to time.
