We place a high emphasis on PE and sport offering a wide range of sporting activities, and all students actively participate in lessons. As Head of PE you will be responsible for overseeing and developing the PE curriculum, embedding the excellent work already achieved, while bringing fresh ideas to the delivery of the curriculum. Teachers that are passionate about their subject motivate students therefore you will need to show a passion for sport and an interest in engaging all students in physical activity. A keen interest in developing the extra-curricular activities is expected and a willingness to run clubs is essential. While the main focus is the development of practical skills needed in various sports, the skills of organisation, teamwork and leadership play a vital role in developing young people. We have a good tradition of developing talent and students have gone on to represent GB in their chosen sport. Our students are lively, keen to learn and characterful. The successful candidate will be an excellent practitioner and a strong team player with a keen interest in developing pedagogical practices and a cutting edge curriculum at the forefront of innovative practice. If you are passionate about physical education and in sharing that passion with our students, this could be the role you are looking for.

The Candidate

Following the departure of the current post holder, we are looking to recruit a dynamic and highly motivated teacher who can build on the excellent work already achieved. The successful candidate will lead the teaching of PE to GCSE level.  Above all, our next Head of PE will have a love for their subject demonstrated through engaging lessons that inspire our students.

We are proud of our reputation as a small, friendly school, built on strong, traditional values, where exceptional pastoral care, the acceptance of others and the celebration of diversity and excellent academic achievement for all are the cornerstones of our success. We have a committed, loyal and talented team of leaders, teachers and support staff.

The Physical Education Department

The Physical Education department has 3 members of staff who all teach a wide range of sports. Staff are keen to expand their provision and to make the PE department a lead department in the school and are looking for a strong leader to help them achieve this . Fernhill has good sports facilities, with extensive football pitches, a modern Sports Hall, large Fitness Suite, a School Gym and outside courts for netball and tennis. PE is popular and a number of students study it at GCSE.

In January 2024 we embarked on the next exciting phase for our school by converting to an academy, and have joined the high-achieving Bohunt Education Trust (BET) family of schools. This move ensures that we are part of a community that provides excellent education, shares best practice and provides experiences and exceptional opportunities for all of our students. We acknowledge that we are on a journey of improvement, which is well underway and are looking for dedicated teachers who wish to play a part in the improvement of the whole school.  This is a team approach and it is often commented upon how warm and welcoming staff are, and how well supported they feel. We are committed to becoming a great school and our motto of ‘be the best you can be’ applies equally to staff and students.
