The School

More House is a Catholic, independent school for girls aged 11-18 situated in the heart of Knightsbridge. It was founded in 1953, when a group of Catholic parents asked the Canonesses of St Augustine to open a day school for their children. The school has continuously thrived since its conception and moved to its present site on Pont Street in 1971. It has been under lay leadership and management for some time, although its links with the Catholic Church are still strong – the school has its own chapel and the chaplain takes mass once a week. 

Mrs Amanda Leach, previously deputy head, became headmistress in April 2014, and Mr Michael Keeley, also previously deputy head, became co-head alongside Amanda in July 2017.

Entrance to the school is generally through the London 11+ Consortium examination and we draw from a wide range of preparatory and primary schools. Class sizes are small – normally in the region of 16 girls, although some classes will decrease in size further up the school. There is good provision for a number of pupils who have either mild SpLD or English as a second or additional language. Results at GCSE, AS, and A2 are good and the school has a strong record of Value Added. Members of the upper sixth go on to a wide range of respected universities and career pathways. The school is also well resourced and the governors have a regular programme of investment and renovation. Relationships between pupils and staff are excellent and visitors often remark on the family atmosphere of the school. The attitude of the girls towards one another and to the common good was rated as ‘outstanding’ in the most recent diocesan inspection.

About the Post and the Department

We are seeking to appoint an outstanding professional to lead the Physical Education department. 

The vacancy arises due to the current Head of Department moving to the USA after 6 very successful years at More House. The department currently consists of 3 members of full-time staff and a part-time dance teacher. The department is a dynamic, stimulating and successful department, which believes in providing high-quality physical education lessons and sports sessions using a variety of teaching and learning strategies. 

The girls at More House play netball, hockey and rounders as their core sports. Sport is flourishing at the school and in the last couple of years we have been Borough Netball Champions in U12, U13 and U16, achieved success at the National Junior Indoor Rowing Championships, U13 Borough Champions in indoor cricket and also had a number of girls competing at an elite level in rowing, fencing, golf and Irish dancing. In addition to the major sports, there is a multitude of extra-curricular sporting activities offered throughout the school day in a bid to maximise engagement in pursuit of a healthy and active lifestyle.

It is an expectation that members of the Physical Education department contribute to before-school, lunchtime and after-school sporting activities. The department takes full advantage of the outstanding local sports facilities at Battersea Park, Imperial College, St Mary’s Paddington and Fulham Reach.

The successful candidate will have a strong understanding of the GCSE and A-Level P.E. curriculum and will be qualified to teach core and academic P.E. across the age range. The candidate must be able to offer another subject as well as Physical Education.
