Job overview

St. Gregory’s Catholic High School is one of the highest performing schools in Warrington and the Liverpool Archdiocese for pupil progress measures.  The school has just been graded as ‘Outstanding’ in a recent Section 48 Inspection of Catholic Life provision. The school has increased its pupil population and is well oversubscribed.

We are looking to appoint an Outstanding leader who can lead the Physical Education department to be highly competitive locally and nationally and put St Gregory’s on the map in terms of sporting competitiveness within a culture where pupils strive to represent the school with pride and passion.

The successful candidate would be working with an experienced team of subject specialists who strive to provide the best learning experience for pupils through high expectations, inspirational teaching and personalised support.  The pupils of the school have impeccable behaviour and are multi-talented with strong academic ability– the successful candidate will ensure that this talent is realised and maximum potential is achieved through sport whilst ensuring enjoyment for all.

The department consists of 4 full time staff (including the head of department) and has recently enjoyed moving into a brand new state of the art sports hall, with new fitness suite, new changing rooms and a theory learning space.  The school has extensive on site playing fields which surround the school site.

At KS3 students will study a variety of activities including Netball, Handball, Football, Rugby, Basketball, Badminton, Dance, Fitness, Rounders, Trampolining, Athletics, Tennis and Cricket.

Pupils will build on and embed the physical development and skills learned in key stages 1 and 2, becoming more competent, confident and expert in their techniques, and apply them across different sports and physical activities. They will understand what makes a performance effective and how to apply these principles to their own and others’ work. They will then develop the confidence and interest to get involved in exercise, sports and activities out of school and in later life, and understand and apply the long-term health benefits of physical activity.

In Year 9 students will select their option pathway for KS4. Students will have the opportunity to discuss this with their class teacher to ensure an appropriate pathway is selected.

In Key Stage 4, pupils opting for GCSE Physical Education currently follow the OCR specification and the school are looking for a leader with a strong track record in the theory aspects of the GCSE specification given its increasing importance.

This is an excellent opportunity for an outstanding and effective practitioner with a proven track record who has the desire to raise standards with strong leadership. The successful candidate will be passionate about Physical Education and Sport and will be personally driven to ensure that every child achieves and makes good progress through challenge and engagement.

Further details and application forms are available from www.stgregoryshigh.com.  Please return completed application forms to the above email address.

This school is committed to safeguarding and promoting the welfare of children and young people.  The successful applicant will be expected to undertake a criminal record check via the DBS.

Values and vision

The mission statement of St Gregory’s reads: “This is our God, the servant King. He calls us now to follow him.” The school’s prayer is: “Inspire us to build a community based on love and respect. May we be empowered to challenge injustice every day. Help us to value and support each other to create a positive Learning environment where all may serve. Amen.”

The staff, parents, governors and students of St. Gregory’s Catholic High School aim to work in partnership to create a vibrant community in which all are valued. At the core of school life is a belief that there is no better inspiration than the example and teaching of Jesus Christ.

The school community seeks to set an example of service, inspired by Jesus, and in doing so fulfil the aspirations that it has for each of its pupils, and to foster their spiritual, academic and personal development.

Ofsted
