Job overview

Hulme Grammar School has a long and rich history of educating children aged 2-18. With a newly appointed Principal of the whole school, structural changes are being made and this is a really important moment in the development of the school. From September 2023, the Nursery, Infants and Junior departments will be known as ‘Hulme Prep School’, a co-ed Prep School of some 210 pupils. This reimagining of the Nursery through to Year 6 will see a Prep School leadership model put in place that facilitates the future financial and operational flourishing of the whole school. The Head of Prep role, along with the Deputy Head of Prep role (soon to be advertised), arises as a result of the exciting opportunity this presents.

Hulme Grammar is not your typical independent school. Its students recognise they are fortunate to have access to a Hulme education but this is no bastion of privilege. They are rounded, well-grounded, socially-minded, determined to make the most of opportunities and ambitious to make the world a better place. They are also huge fun! A Hulme education is deliberately broad and balanced because this will best set students up to be successful in their future studies, the workplace and life generally. The school is unapologetically academic but committed to delivering so much more than good exam results, as important as they are.

The new Head of Prep will have responsibility for the leadership and management of a team of highly-qualified, committed and hardworking staff. They will work closely with the school’s marketing department to ensure that the quality of our educational offer is known and celebrated widely and that the school remains the school of choice for parents wanting the best broad and balanced education for their children. They will help to formulate a strategic development plan that will focus not on survival, but flourishing, and integral to this will be the work of growing pupil numbers. The school has been through a number of iterations in its long history; if the idea of having a hand in shaping the strategic direction of travel for the next stage in its evolution excites you then we would love to hear from you.

ISI Report

Hulme Grammar School received a scheduled and routine inspection from the Independent School Inspectorate (the body which monitors standards in independent schools) in September 2023.

This inspection was held under the new inspection framework which came into effect in September this year, Hulme being among a handful of the first schools nationally to be inspected according to this new framework.

Under the new inspection framework, schools do not receive a one-word judgement or grading by inspectors. This is important to note: no longer will independent schools be rated ‘Excellent’ or ‘Good’ as they were in the past under the old framework and, in line with that, this report contains no grade.

Instead you will read that we were found to be compliant in all areas and meet the standards and regulations which govern the running of an independent school. The report then comments on a range of aspects of school life – everything from safeguarding and quality of education, risk assessments to pastoral care.

Schools are complex, dynamic institutions, and we welcome the move away from one-word judgements to a more nuanced style of reporting, which highlights existing strengths and outlines areas for development and improvement.  We are delighted that the inspectors have highlighted so many of the aspects of Hulme life that we are proud of too.  Please take some time to read over the report. It contains lots of praise of some of the brilliant things that happen here day on day.

Here you can watch a video summary of some of the key findings from the report, recorded with input from stakeholders across the Hulme community, including staff, students, parents and Governors.
