Job overview

The Head and Governors of Plymouth College are seeking to appoint a dynamic and inspirational Head of Plymouth College Prep School from September 2022 at a very exciting time in its development.

For the last 145 years, Plymouth College has consistently delivered excellent, innovative and creative education.

Founded in 1877, originally as a boys’ school, Plymouth College has a unique history of providing a first class, holistic and outward-looking education.  During the middle of the 20th Century, the College served as a direct grant grammar school until 1976, when it became independent and the first girls were admitted to the School’s Sixth Form. It became fully coeducational in 1995, and in 2004 the College merged with St Dunstan’s Abbey School, with the Prep School moving to the old St Dunstan’s site. In September 2021, the Prep School joined the Senior School on the Ford Park site, joining together all our pupils for the first time in 70 years.  As we look towards our 150th anniversary in 5 years’ time, our newly launched Development Office is presently planning many events over the next few years.

Plymouth College today is a forward-looking and inclusive educational community providing a broad, balanced and enriching education.  Just over 400 pupils are currently educated at the Senior School, of whom approximately 100 are boarders. The Prep School educates approximately 150 pupils with numbers presently increasing at a pleasing rate. The boarders come from around 35 countries, with many attracted by the College’s elite sports provision. The range of nationalities adds greatly to the cultural richness of the College.

The College received its last integrated ISI Inspection in 2019 and the quality of pupils’ academic and personal development, as well as other achievements, were described as excellent.

With the recent developments in the School, this is a truly exciting time to join Plymouth College and help realise the next phase of its development.  The Head of Plymouth College Prep School sits on the Senior Leadership Team of Plymouth College and will play a critical role in ensuring a cohesive and compelling one school vision.

The School welcomes applicants from a wide range of backgrounds and is open to considering serving Heads or Deputy Heads within a prep or primary environment, as well as those currently based in senior schools. Applications are welcomed from those able to take up the post in September 2022 or January 2023.  A competitive package is available to the successful candidate, as well as the possibility of on-site family accommodation.

About Plymouth College

Plymouth College is an HMC co-educational school based in the bustling maritime city of Plymouth with the magnificent moorland, countryside and coastal landscapes of Devon and Cornwall close to hand. The school has been at the forefront of education in the South West of England since 1877 and, whilst quietly conscious of its past and traditions, it is now renowned for being forward-looking and internationally successful.  The school offers continuous education from age 3 to 18 with boarding facilities from age 11, resulting in an international community which, among the students, represents over 35 nationalities.

We believe Plymouth College provides a first class, holistic education.  Academic excellence in the classroom is enhanced by a wealth of enriching clubs and after school activities, such as music, the arts, drama and sports.  Our Outdoor Education department is sector leading, providing a plethora of activities from caving and climbing, to coasteering and mountain biking amidst the beautiful South West countryside and coastline.

Plymouth College enjoys an enviable worldwide reputation in swimming and diving, which has resulted in multiple national, international and Olympic successes. Traditional team sports such as rugby and hockey have also gained significant recognition, and in 2019 the U14 Girls' Hockey team were National Tier 2 Champions.

We place an emphasis on developing the all-important soft skills, which are sought after by employers, the skills which turn interviews into offers of employment, and which ensure that Plymouth College students fly further and faster in their careers than peers educated elsewhere.  Our students are quietly confident, resilient, and possess communication skills and values that set them out from the crowd.

We value each of our students as an individual.  Education is personalised by our highly qualified teachers, with lively engaging lessons and modern teaching techniques supported by our emphasis on traditional values.

At the heart of our educational ethos is a culture of success, and a warm and welcoming atmosphere:  the Plymouth College family.  A happy child will be a successful child.  Surrounded by like-minded individuals, our students enjoy their education and celebrate their enthusiasm for learning, whilst developing lifelong friendships.

A Plymouth College education is: inspiring; aspirational; culturally rich; and life enhancing.

ISI Inspection

“The school is extremely successful in fulfilling its aim to produce happy and knowledgeable young adults who strive to reach their potential and gain confidence in their learning. Pupils benefit from an extremely broad, balanced and flexible curriculum in both the prep and senior schools, and from an exceptional elite sports programme in the senior school as part of wide-ranging extra-curricular provision.”
