Job overview

The School

Lancaster has a reputation as a vibrant, forward-thinking and diverse educational establishment. While the school offers a strong educational programme, combining local and international curricula, from preschool to sixth form, the focus is on helping students develop their own individuality and sense of purpose.

The Lancaster School is a non-profit, private bilingual school founded in 1979 and is located in the south of Mexico City. With 850 students spread across two sites there is a strong sense of community and this drives much of what we do in our daily work. Lancaster also has a reputation for being an unconventional school and this is, in ways large and small, indeed true. Many of us at the school believe Lancaster offers a unique teaching and learning experience which enriches our professional lives.

The school is keen to appoint a HEAD OF PRIMARY that is confident and supportive whilst having a view to leading the continual development of this well established school. The ideal candidate will be motivated and willing to learn as much as to lead, with a view to enhancing the school’s ability to provide a rich education for our students. They will have a genuine passion for education and a desire to work with students, colleagues and the community together in building on the school’s unique strengths.

The Role

The successful candidate will serve as the leader for the Primary school, providing leadership and guidance to staff, students and parents. The Head of Primary is responsible for the quality of education offered to all students and will  take a strategic role in the future development of the school’s implementation of the Primary Years Curriculum (PYP) and ensuring the school continues to focus on the development of the whole child.

We seek a school leader who has a genuine passion for education, a proven record of success in a primary school position of responsibility, and the leadership ability to continue the development of the school in line with the Lancaster School Mission and Philosophy.

Personal Profile

Lancaster School is looking to appoint a suitably qualified and experienced educator to this post. The successful applicant will:

Have a passion for primary education

Be bilingual (English/Spanish)

Have experience in leading a bilingual / bicultural team

Have excellent interpersonal skills; able to relate well with parents, students and teachers, and inspire trust in others.

Be able to show initiative and innovate whilst ensuring agreed policies and procedures are followed.

Be a strong team player who enjoys working on their own initiative in a collaborative environment

Be self-sufficient, flexible, resourceful and able to meet deadlines.

“The most important thing in life is to stop saying ‘I wish’ and star saying ‘I will.’ Consider nothing impossible, then treat possibilities as probabilities”

- Charles Dickens

The Lancaster School is a non-profit, private school founded in 1979 and is located in the south of Mexico City. From small beginnings, the school has grown in size and quality, while keeping a strong sense of its individualism and identity, in line with the School’s Mission and Philosophy. From the start, Lancaster has offered all our students integrated programs combining the Mexican and British education systems, taught through both English and Spanish.

Lancaster has a unique educational philosophy, based on our long-standing view that the real aim of education is to allow each person to embark on a life-long journey of self-discovery, so constructing our own identity. As such many of our school systems are focussed on supporting Lancaster students discover who they are and who they want to be. Mariana, one of our Lower 6 students, wrote about the school as part of an anthropology class assignment:

“The Lancaster School has a sense of freedom, diversity, respect and empathy. Lancaster allows you to see the world from a different perspective. They teach you how to be a human being and not a machine. Teachers don’t let you fall, but rather, hold your hand to guide you. They let you be free.”

Lancaster has a reputation for being an unconventional school and this is, in ways large and small, indeed true. This stems from our philosophy and the reality that we are, as our mission states, a community of learners. The central idea is that we are engaged in the development of our individual identity, applies to the adults in our community as much as our students. Each of us who takes up the challenge of working at Lancaster finds that we have to examine some of our most cherished beliefs about education. It is our aim that during their time at Lancaster all our staff grow as people, in ways planned and perhaps unplanned. As a community, we welcome diversity in all its forms and the complexity that goes with this.

To be happy and successful at Lancaster teachers need to be: passionate about what they teach, be open-minded, and be reflective. They also need to be adaptable and believe that learning is a process, not a task for our students and ourselves. If you find yourself agreeing with this we would be happy to talk to you about becoming a member of the Lancaster team.
