Job overview

The Governors are seeking a well-qualified, committed and practising Catholic to appoint to the key position of Head of Religious Education in the College who will join us for the new academic year in September 2023.

The prime task of the head of the department is to assist the Principal and Vice Principal in the leadership of the Catholic community built at St. Charles. The Catholic community finds expression of its faith in the daily living out of gospel values, in a regular and engaging liturgical life, a stimulating Ethics programme for all students and academic excellence in the more formal examined curriculum.

Our Mission Statement encapsulates our ambition for our College:

The College’s mission is to enable all its students to achieve their greatest potential, inspiring them to wisdom, compassion and leadership in service to others. We aim to achieve this in a community defined by Catholic values which has the person and teaching of Christ at its Centre.

St Charles Catholic Sixth Form College remains a designated sixth form college is on a single site located in North Kensington, within the Royal Borough of Kensington and Chelsea. The College draws students from a variety of backgrounds from all over London, who bring with them the challenges of contemporary vales in an inner-city. Finding a way to celebrate and proclaim the Catholic faith in a manner that resonates with young people, and remains respectful of their varied and distinctive cultural, ethnic and religious identities is a complex, but exciting challenge.

The successful applicant will have the opportunity of teaching Philosophy, Ethics & Christianity and Ethics in a Catholic context.   The successful candidate will also be expected to contribute to the liturgical life of the College.

The department offers the edquas A level course in Philosophy, Ethics and Christianity. The department adopts a shared teaching policy, and works hard to share resources and approaches to ensure a consistent quality of experience for its students.

All students at the College follow a Core R.E programme in line with the RCD framework, consisting of a structured programme of 55 minutes week. Clearly set in a Catholic context it is sufficiently inclusive in content and discourse to accommodate the perspectives of other denominations, faiths and those of no faith.

The R.E department benefits from specialist teaching rooms and close relationship with a chaplaincy enriched by a beautiful chapel and its own designated social area adjacent. The College has a full-time lay Chaplain to oversee the liturgical life of the College and the R.E team work closely with him. There is currently one other member of the department.

The post is appropriate both for established Catholic teachers wanting post-16 experience. Full induction and professional support is provided.
