Job overview

St. John’s-Kilmarnock School is seeking an enthusiastic, visionary leader to serve as its new Head of School and invites applications, nominations, and expressions of interest. Taking office in August 2019, the new Head will build on the School’s past achievements and present strengths to continue moving the School forward.

St. John’s-Kilmarnock School (SJK) is a not-for-profit, co-educational, independent, and accredited IB Continuum School offering a complete JK to Grade 12 programme to Canadian and international students from a variety of backgrounds. SJK is one of only six schools in Ontario to offer the continuum of three International Baccalaureate Programs: the Primary Years Programme (PYP), the Middle Years Programme (MYP), and the university preparatory Diploma Programme. With innovations in teaching and learning backed by strong donor support, SJK’s record of national and international university placement complements its mission of nurturing well-rounded, confident students in their pursuit of academic success, personal growth, and social responsibility. SJK excels in extra-curricular activities from varsity sports to music, drama, and visual arts, as well as a unique focus on local, national, and international philanthropy and experiential travel. Enrolment at the school is approximately 400 students, with boarding being introduced for the 2018/2019 academic year.

SJK serves the greater Waterloo and Guelph regions of Ontario, Canada. The area, 75 kilometres southwest of Toronto, is home to world-class universities and colleges, and has emerged as a global centre of innovation and technology. Partnerships with local universities and colleges (Waterloo, Guelph, Wilfrid Laurier and Conestoga) and the Communitech Hub Centre for tech innovation have opened unique doors of opportunity for the School’s future. Its 36 acre campus is equipped with state-of-the-art technology resources and modern facilities, seven outdoor playing fields, and a large pond for canoeing and kayaking. Construction of an athletic complex will begin this fall. For further details about SJK, please visit www.sjkschool.org

Reporting to the Board of Governors, the Head of School is responsible for setting the strategic direction, developing and implementing appropriate action plans, and building a high performance leadership team focused on teaching and learning. The Head of School will supervise and support faculty and staff, engage with students, implement innovative academic practices, and continue the evolution of the School. As the face of SJK, the Head of School will create new ways to engage, educate, communicate, and build enduring relationships with its internal and external community.

The successful candidate will be an experienced leader with a proven track record of success in past educational leadership roles, and a perspective compatible with SJK’s values and culture. Excellent academic credentials, a knowledge and commitment to IB programmes, exceptional team building and communication abilities, an understanding of the role of independent schools, and a rapport with young people are all qualities required in the Head, with boarding experience as an asset.

The search committee will begin reviewing applications immediately and will continue until the position is filled. Applications, including a letter of introduction and the names of three references (who will not be contacted without consent of the applicant), should be forwarded in confidence, to the School's executive search consultants:

First established in 1972, St John’s Kilmarnock School is an International Baccalaureate independent school located in Ontario, Canada. Becoming co-educational in 1985, the school currently occupies a 36-acre campus in Breslau. The school offers places to children aged 3-18, and is able to boast of a wide range of modern teaching and recreational facilities. This most notably includes heavy investment into technology and IT infrastructure, including widespread access to fibre-optic internet connectivity, as well as numerous well-trained IT staff providing an engaging curriculum. In addition to these facilities, the school also plays host to a number of playing fields, a dedicated athletics centre, and a large gymnasium. In terms of curriculum, St John’s primarily follows the International Baccalaureate programme. This begins at a younger age than many similar schools, with the school being authorised to run the International Baccalaureate Primary Years programme, with students late moving into the Middle Years and then finally the Diploma Programme, available in a wide range of different courses. Outside of the classroom, St John’s makes great use of its facilities in order to offer numerous extra-curricular activities.

Teaching Information

Teachers at St John’s are expected to hold accredited teaching qualifications when applying, as well as having experience of both their chosen specialist subject as well as knowledge and experience of the International Baccalaureate programme. As extra-curricular activities are so important to the life of the school, teachers will often be asked to take part in these outside the classroom, and contribute to their pupil’s personal development.
