Job overview

HEAD OF SCHOOL – TORFIELD SCHOOL

From 1st September 2020

Highly competitive salary – National Leadership Scale (NoR 102)

This is a rare and exciting opportunity for an ambitious leader to help shape the future development of our Outstanding primary SEN school. Torfield School meets the needs of children with Autism, Moderate and Severe learning difficulties, Speech, Language and Communication difficulties, SEMH and other associated Learning Difficulties. In practice this means many of our children have a range of complex learning needs.

Torfield is a special academy and is federated with nearby secondary special school, Saxon Mount. The Academy Directors and Executive Head wish to appoint an innovative senior leader who has a proven track record of successfully driving whole school improvement.

Applications from experienced and successful mainstream or special school senior leaders are especially welcomed.

We are looking to appoint an exceptionally talented and dynamic individual, who will secure continued improvement, is aspirational for our pupils and who, with the support of the Executive Head, can effectively lead a dedicated team of professionals to build upon existing strengths and further develop outstanding provision within the school and across the trust. Torfield is a fantastic place to work and has been successful in securing improved outcomes for its pupils (who are fabulous) in recent years.

Visits to the school are strongly recommended. If you would like an application pack or an informal discussion with the Executive Head, or you would like to arrange a visit, please contact the school secretary, Kayleigh Dicker. We are committed to equality of opportunity & safeguarding & promoting the welfare of children & young people: all successful applicants will be required to undergo an enhanced DBS check.

Closing date for applications is NOON 3rd February 2020.

Interviews will be held in the week commencing 10th February.

Torfield is a special school for children with Autism, Communication and associated learning difficulties. We are a primary school and have children aged between 4yrs – 11 years. We have two sites, one in Croft Road and the other in Parker Road.

As a significant number of our children have autism and communication difficulties we strive to ensure that we have an environment that meets these particular needs. We use visual timetables, pictures, objects of reference and many other visuals to support the children’s learning.  We also use Makaton signing and symbols to support communication.

Some of our children present with very challenging behaviour. This is usually associated with their autism or special needs and we try to ensure a consistent and positive approach through the use of social stories, Individual behaviour and Education plans and a significantly modified curriculum.

Some of our children have sensory needs. An example may be that they find loud noises, bright lights, strong smells or food tastes or textures difficult to tolerate. We identify the issue and then develop strategies to support the children with coping with their particular need.

All of our children have learning difficulties and need a significant amount of support to help them access the curriculum. Some children have speech and language difficulties and we have a team of speech and language therapists who assist us with meeting these needs. Most of our children have difficulty with their receptive language skills.

We are a very positive and happy school.
