Job overview

If you are looking for an exciting career opportunity this could be your chance to shine. We are seeking to provide an enthusiastic and dynamic leader with the opportunity to demonstrate their ability to step up to the challenge of steering our English department forward on its journey to achieving outstanding outcomes. The successful candidate will be highly motivated and determined to ensure every member of the team plays their part in the department’s commitment to academic excellence.

We are a 3-19 all age fully inclusive Academy on a journey to become an outstanding organisation and are very proud that in 2014 we received an SSAT award for our students being in the top fifth of schools nationally when looking at their progress across a broad range of subjects. We are also delighted to be able to offer state-of-the-art facilities in a new £36 million building providing staff with the opportunity to teach in a cutting edge and vibrant environment.

It is an exciting time to be joining us as we work hard to improve and bring in line our KS4 outcomes with those in our primary and 6th form phases which are already considered to be good. We are currently in consultation to become a Multi Academy Trust alongside two outstanding schools -   St James’s C of E High School and Canon Slade School, and should it come into being later this summer there will be opportunities to work collaboratively within the wider MAT community sharing good practice to deliver the much needed improvements. As a family of Church of England schools we believe we can offer more opportunities to pupils and staff and continue to create an educational environment which celebrates the uniqueness of every child.

You will believe that our students can achieve at the highest academic levels given the best teaching, guidance and care. Your own teaching will be ‘Always Good’ and often outstanding, leading to excellent progress for students. The role will require you to both support and hold to account colleagues and students that fail to uphold or demonstrate agreed standards. You will model these standards and leadership qualities in all that you do. You will have demonstrated personal drive and initiative and a willingness to work collaboratively to meet the demands of a continuously improving organisation.

Experience of delivering strong outcomes at KS4 & KS5 is essential.

Applications are welcomed from either experienced department heads with a strong track record of leading a team to deliver outstanding academic outcomes, or outstanding teachers with leadership experience and the required personal attributes to take on the challenge of this next step in their career. All must display those key personal qualities required during a period of change – a commitment to work flexibly to do what it takes for the benefit of our young people, the ability to persuade and influence colleagues to work hard but smart and importantly, to evidence a high level of personal resilience.

A package of staff benefits including a paid Healthcare cash plan, Employee Assistance programme, Cycle to Work and Childcare voucher schemes are available to all our staff. In addition, free lunches are provided to those staff willing to sit and role model appropriate mealtime behaviour with our students or undertake a lunchtime duty. A subsidised weekly hot or cold drinks allowance is also offered.

The academy is committed to safeguarding and promoting the welfare of young people and expects all staff and volunteers to share this commitment. This post is subject to an enhanced disclosure from the Disclosure and Barring Service. We welcome applications regardless of age, gender, ethnicity or religion.

Please note that if the MAT is established, then all employees of Bolton St Catherine’s Academy will be employed by the new MAT.

Bolton St Catherine’s Academy is located in a £36 million building with innovative spaces and state of the art facilities to support children’s learning. These facilities are amongst the very best in the country and support us in delivering a rich, varied and relevant curriculum and fantastic extra curricular activities outside the classroom. We are co-located with Firwood High School with whom we share some central facilities and to whom we also provide some ancillary services.

Bolton St Catherine’s Academy is an inclusive, purposeful and high achieving educational community for children and young people aged 3 to 19. The Christian values of hope, valuing self and others, responsibility, truth, forgiveness and justice pervade all aspects of Academy life. The care, guidance and support for our children and young people are exceptional. Our specialisms are business and enterprise, leadership and mathematics and we promote life-long learning.

It is an exciting time to be joining us as we work hard to improve and bring in line our KS4 outcomes with those in our primary and 6th form phases which are already considered to be good. We are in the final stages of consultation to join two outstanding schools in the newly formed Bishop Fraser Trust early next year - St James’s C of E High School and Canon Slade School, where there will be opportunities to work collaboratively within the wider MAT community, sharing good practice and building on the much needed improvement work and progress that has been taking place in our secondary phase this year. As a family of Church of England schools we believe we can offer more opportunities to pupils and staff and continue to create an educational environment which celebrates the uniqueness of every child.

Through the values of  • Work hard. • Be respectful and honest. • Value others and relationships with them •  we continue to build on the progress we have made. Our Secondary and Primary schools are full again this year and not forgetting that in 2016 Ofsted judged our Primary School and Sixth Form as "Good". Our Primary school has also gained the best KS2 results of any school in the BL2 postcode area. We continue to develop the mind set and culture within the Academy so that every member of our community, students and staff, strives hard to make progress and takes immense pride in their effort and work.

Our students will leave us with:  • Good academic outcomes • The Christian values of respect, tolerance and service • A positive and enduring outlook  so that they live happy, healthy and purposeful lives – irrespective of their background or circumstances.
