The Royal School in Transylvania is a unique international school located in the picturesque city of Cluj-Napoca. We provide a targeted first class education from KG - Y13. We cater for 23 nationalities having 190 students today. We value a total educational approach from academic achievement to holistic development with our Duke of Edinburgh and after school activities. We provide a Cambridge curriculum with students working towards either the Primary/Secondary Checkpoints, IGCSE’s, or International AS/A Levels. 

The Royal School in Transylvania is a COBIS (Council of British International Schools) Member and is dedicated to constant school improvement. As part of this we will be undertaking full accreditation with COBIS in 2022. 

Cluj-Napoca is a small, green city enveloped by hills on all sides, it was once known as the capital city of the Grand Principality of Transylvania and the Austro-Hungarian architecture reflects the importance of this regional hub. Combining a modern European city with the history of the region means that there is always something to do, and we are blessed with the sorts of outstanding local amenities you would expect from any major destination. Cluj is one of the safest cities in Europe, and is also home to Romania’s largest University. It is fast becoming an international technology hub resulting in a population that is young, enthusiastic and with very high levels of spoken English. There is also an international airport with excellent connections to the UK and Europe, often served by Low-Cost airlines, with new routes added regularly. The city is a relatively undiscovered European gem!

We are seeking to appoint a well-qualified, experienced, and highly motivated Head of School. We are specifically looking for a leader who will contribute to the further development of our dynamic school, someone who can follow the existing vision and add to high academic standards. The successful candidate will have a strong track record as a Secondary Teacher and an outstanding Head of School; they will also need to demonstrate flexibility, serving and collaborative leadership, hard work and academic excellence.

Our school is characterised by our low teacher to student ratios (1:5) and highly effective teaching and learning, meaning that our students receive the attention they need to make exceptional progress.

We have some of the most highly qualified and experienced teaching staff available in international education. Our classrooms are furnished with the latest technological advances including interactive viewing screens. 

We have recently moved into additional green certified buildings to cater for the growing school population during special health & safety measures.   • A recognised teacher qualification (QTS) for Secondary, an NPQH (or equivalent),

  • Awareness of educational developments and what constituents world-class learning,  
  • Strong leadership, organisational and team building skills, 
  • Strong interpersonal skills to build positive relationships as part of an international staff body, 
  • Honest, transparent and caring. 

Further desired experience includes: 

  • Experience with school inspections/as inspector,
  • Experience in teaching academic subjects at IGCSE, AS/A level
  • Knowledge of, and experience with COBIS organisations,

Curriculum

 Royal School is a fully accredited Council of British International Schools (COBIS) school, the only official organisation to accredit educational projects that use English as a teaching language, outside the United Kingdom. COBIS ensure a high quality education at a global level in over 400 schools worldwide.

In Romania, the Royal School in Transylvania is registered with ARACIP as an international school.

Royal School (RS) teaches foundation subjects (Geography, History, IT, PE, Art, Drama, Music, Modern Foreign Languages (MFL) and Religious Studies) in accordance with the National Curriculum of England, from Reception through to Year 9. Core subjects (English, Mathematics and Science) are taught in accordance with Cambridge curricular.

The Cambridge Primary Programme, Cambridge Secondary 1 and Cambridge Assessment International Examinations (CAIE) were fully introduced in 2017. The curriculum is enriched by the provision of Romanian, Hungarian, German, French and Spanish Language learning to indigenous students or to students belonging to the dominant minorities.

The Curriculum is all the learning and experiences, formal and informal, which RS provides for students. Our aim is always to give all students an education that is exciting and worthwhile, preparing them for life beyond school, and laying the secure foundations for lifelong learning.

In meeting these aims, RS follows the requirements of:

  • The National Curriculum for England, for our International Line of Studies for Key Stages 1, 2 and 3.
  • The Cambridge Assessment International Curriculum, for our International Line of Studies for Key Stages 4, and 5 (Cambridge IGCSE / Cambridge AS and A2 Level)
  • Romanian/Hungarian/German/French and Spanish language and literature studies.

RS curriculum principles are underpinned by the assurance of equality of access and opportunity for learning and progress. They promote simultaneously academic achievement and personal growth (schooling and education).

The RS curriculum is:

Accessible: The subjects are taught at a level appropriate to the age and the expected skills of our students. The admissions process indicates those potential students who will cope best with the curriculum. The use of a variety of approaches to teaching caters for students with a variety of learning styles.

Broad: The range of subjects offers teaching and learning in styles that enhance the analytical, creative, intellectual and physical development of our students.

Coherent: Embracing the different areas of learning and experience, so that these do not appear as disparate subjects, but are linked to develop a holistic approach to students’ personal and social growth.

Differentiated: The use of a variety of approaches to teaching caters for students with a variety of learning styles, and allows them to learn effectively.

Inclusive: All parts of the curriculum are available to all students.

Balanced: Ensuring that each area of learning and experience will be given appropriate attention in relation to the others and to the curriculum as a whole.

RS curriculum contains Core subjects in English, Mathematics and Sciences (Biology, Chemistry and Physics) as well as Foundation Subjects in IT, MFL (German, Spanish and French). PE is compulsory throughout all educational stages. Our students can also study social sciences (History, Business Studies, Economics and Geography) as well as subjects that develop creativity and technological skills (Art, Music and Drama).

Students’ moral, social and emotional skills (PSHEE, Every Child Matters; RE) are all catered for. An important role in students’ life-long training is played by their involvement in our community action plan, in the Duke of Edinburgh International Award programme, and local working experience programme.

RS curriculum is developed and enriched with optional courses and clubs in the after-school programme. A flexible timetable widens the choices available to students and enables them to follow a curriculum that is best suited to their interests, skills and needs.
