How is Ark Greenwich different?

1. This is a strict no excuses, no mobile phone school. We sweat the small stuff every single day and standards are extremely high. 

2. This is a small school model (600 pupils aged 11-16) because we believe that our close-knit community provides the optimum conditions for academic success because we know every child. 

3. Pupil’s behaviour for learning is renowned for being exceptional so our teachers can focus their efforts on the things that matter – planning and delivering exceptional lessons for our pupils. Senior leaders are quick to support staff but also to hold them to the very highest standards. 

4. Our curriculum is traditional and academic and we do not take shortcuts – we do not offer vocational courses or equivalencies such as Btecs, Vcerts or the ECDL. We only offer full GCSE courses.

6. Staff wellbeing is one of our main priorities. We provide breakfast for staff each morning and have a 6pm weekday and all weekend work related communication curfew to ensure our staff are able to maintain an effective work-life balance. We do not do knee-jerk reactions, fads or last minute deadlines. Our systems and processes - including for communication, pupil marking and feedback and assessment - are modern, efficient and highly organised and the approaches we take are led by research and what we know to work best within of our context. 

7. We put high-quality teaching at the heart of what we do. We have 75 mins of thoughtful staff training every week. Live coaching, co-planning and current best practice in the field of education is central to our approach – but we don’t do fads. 

8. We don’t grade individual lessons or ask for lesson plans but we do focus on progress over time and typicality by ensuring long and medium term plans are carefully designed and embedded across the curriculum. 

9. Our pupils enjoy a compulsory co-curricular program on a Wednesday afternoon much the same as in the private sector. This program includes a strong focus on community volunteering and the promotion of both inclusive and elite performance through a range of sporting, debating, public speaking, expressive and other activities. We facilitate 12 drop down days per academic year ensuring our pupils benefit from a range of life enriching experiences.

The Role and the Department 

As Head of the Science department, you will lead, develop and manage the effective delivery of an outstanding curriculum, which enables the highest level of student progress and attainment. You will be a senior member of the professional community of Middle Leadership and promote outstanding teaching and learning and a strong school culture within a nurturing and academically rigorous environment. You will be Head of a department with 6 fully qualified Science teachers and a technical support team. We do not use day supply teachers.   

Science is highly valued and taught throughout the curriculum each week from Year 7-9 (4 x one hour periods per week). In Year 9 pupils will select their GCSE option subjects and Triple Science is a popular choice with approximately 60% of pupils selecting this over the combined award. Our first class and fully equipped Science classrooms offer the ideal environment for our students to thrive and fulfil their potential.  

The department specific Progress 8 score is +0.3 with over 40% of students going on to achieve the top grade 7-9 category.

We opened in September 2012 as a new Free School - a four-form entry, state-funded, mixed, non-denominational, 11-18 comprehensive school for the children of Greenwich. We are now full at 11-16. The School is extremely popular and is 6 times oversubscribed and staff are hard-working and committed to the school’s vision.

We have some very clear ‘givens’ and below is set out what we think are the most important features of our model. The school's ethos runs in line with our core values of Ambition, Growth, Fellowship & Scholarship. Underpinning this is a clear focus on Behaviour and we have exceptionally high expectations of our students.

We invest heavily in the curriculum and believe that the design and implementation of the curriculum is at the heart of school life.  It creates an atmosphere for learning and sets the tone and philosophy for teachers.

Alongside being a school that values the importance of subject disciplines we also invest in high-quality weekly training and have access to world-class development opportunities through our partnerships with a wide range of schools, universities and sector-leading organisations. We are an accredited CPD provider through the Teacher Development Trust, many of our departments have won external awards in History and Computer Science, and we work closely with well-regarded curriculum providers. This means that we can help all staff at the school grow and develop.

We run a compulsory enrichment programme every Wednesday afternoon to ensure all our pupils receive a more holistic education. All of the AGFS staff commit to delivering elements of this. We also run a series of 12 ‘Drop Down Days’ throughout the year where the timetable is collapsed, enabling all pupils to undertake day-long programmes and activities – for example, university visits and trips to museums and theatres -  as well as providing space for more intensive subject-led learning and extended academic projects.

AGFS has been described by The Economist as providing “plenty of hope for British education” and was selected by the Evening Standard as one of five “new model schools” in London.
