Salford City Academy has an exciting opportunity due to an internal promotion to appoint an excellent Head of Science. We wish to appoint a dynamic and inspirational teacher to lead a very successful Science department into the next phase of their development. The Science department at Salford City Academy has enjoyed outstanding results, with Combined Science improving year on year and Triple Science results that put us in the top 10% of all schools in the country. The Science team at Salford City Academy is an exciting team to join, in 2020 they were awarded ‘team of year’ for all United learning schools. The successful candidate will be joining a dynamic, supportive, and experienced team which improving the life students for our students at the core of their values.


The Science team compromises two technicians, a second in department and six further teachers. This post would be suitable for an experienced head of department wanting to lead an outstanding team or an experienced leader in Science ready to take their next step on the career path. Our successful candidate will be dedicated in the delivery of high-quality teaching with the aim of helping students develop a broad base of skills through practical, investigational, and theoretical work, across all levels and abilities. Our appointed candidate must be able to demonstrate excellent subject knowledge and communicate this in an enthusiastic and imaginative way in both practical and theory lessons.

In February 2022 Ofsted judged the academy to continue to be a good school citing ‘Pupils at Salford City Academy said that they enjoy coming to school to learn. They feel happy and safe at school.’ Leaders have high expectations of pupils’ behaviour. Pupils behave well in lessons and around the school. They are polite, courteous and well-mannered. Leaders do not tolerate any derogatory behaviour. Pupils respect each other’s differences.’

Academic results at the academy have improved year on year and we were delighted to celebrate the schools ‘best’ results this summer achieving a progress 8 of +0.31, placing us in the top 24% of schools in the country and top of all northern United Learning schools. The academy enjoys state of the art facilities and has a committed, high quality teaching team which is focussed on engaging and motivating all students. The academy is now oversubscribed, and we are looking to for opportunities to recruit excellent candidates into our fantastic team.

Salford City Academy is committed to professional development; all teaching staff are expected to actively participate in a programme of continuing professional development (CPD). We work collaboratively, share good practice, and have a Trust-wide approach to development. We need to make sure that we have the right people in the right place, doing the job that is needed to build excellent provision for our children and young people. Staff are supported professionally to ensure they can do that and are valued and recognised for their work. We are passionate about teaching and learning and there are numerous opportunities to collaborate across the curriculum and develop pedagogy for the benefit of students. This investment in teaching and learning and professional development is supported by the United Learning Salford Cluster and also at a wider whole trust level. Such a commitment is reflected in the number of staff participating in leadership programmes over recent years, and more importantly the number now in leadership positions with the academy, cluster and trust.

Our subject specialists, our Group-wide intranet, our own curriculum and our online learning portal all help us share knowledge and resources, helping to simplify work processes and manage workloads for an improved work-life balance. Our approaches within the academy support this so that our focus can be on planning and delivering high quality teaching and learning. For example, all behaviour and detentions are managed centrally by the Inclusion Team. This allows teachers the time and capacity to deliver high quality lessons and supports their workload and well-being
