Job overview

We are excited to be looking for a dynamic, forward thinking Head of Department to take our Science department to the next level. We are looking for an inspiring and energetic leader with a real passion for Science. You will be a motivated, enthusiastic and driven individual who has the skills and determination to make a significant difference to the lives of our students and share our single goal of ‘Students First’.

We offer an exciting opportunity to lead a team of seven teachers and two technicians. You will have leadership experience, be determined and driven and have the ability to transform students’ lives. You will work alongside a fantastic team to continue to achieve the highest possible outcomes for students, irrespective of their backgrounds or starting points.

Outwood Academy City joined the Outwood Grange Academies Trust in January 2014. Outwood Grange Academies Trust is nationally recognised as one of the highest performing multi-academy trusts in the country.

In 2019, 65% of our students achieved level 4+ in both English and Mathematics. The Science department has undergone rapid transformation over the past 3 years with results repeatedly sitting around 60% for 2+ level 4+ and 40% for 2+ level 5+. This is alongside a third of the cohort studying triple science and gaining outstanding outcomes. The progress for separate science is outstanding, greater than 0.5, whilst the departmental progress score is 0.

The role of Head of Science at Outwood Academy City would be ideal for either an experienced Head of Department or someone looking to make that next step. You will be extensively supported by a team of Science Directors, allowing you to strategically lead the department, whilst receiving support and advice from the Director team. This is a great opportunity for the right candidate to lead a dynamic department and be pivotal in shaping the department on its journey to outstanding.

Through our partnership with the Outwood Institute of Education, we can offer high quality support and professional development programs. Being part of the wider Trust, which also has academies across Nottinghamshire, Derbyshire and South Yorkshire, provides a significant amount of career progression.

This is a critical appointment for the Academy and is an exciting opportunity for you to move your career onto the next stage.

We warmly welcome and encourage potential applicants to visit the Academy. To arrange a visit, please contact Hayley Keenan, Regional Director of Science by email: h.keenan@outwood.com

We are an Ofsted Good with Outstanding leadership 11-16 academy, with state-of-the-art facilities, based in the steel city of Sheffield.

We are delighted that in its latest report, Ofsted noted that ‘staff are very proud to be part of Outwood Academy City,’ and that our ‘staff appreciate the high-quality professional development opportunities they receive’ which we offer working closely with the wider Outwood Family.

Serving the bustling city of Sheffield, Outwood Academy City was constructed in 2011 with state-of-the-art facilities and joined Outwood Grange Academies Trust three years later. The school has undergone a huge transformation for its 1000 students, with an innovative curriculum and a personalised approach to learning enabling them to realise their vocational, practical, creative and academic abilities. This was recognised by Ofsted in February 2019, when the academy was judged ‘Good with Outstanding Leadership’. Inspectors noted that, “Leaders and teachers demonstrate high expectations for all pupils. They are determined that pupils achieve well in their subjects”.

We believe this transformation is due to our innovative, knowledge-rich curriculum, designed to personalise learning for every student, helping them to reach their potential.

We have won numerous awards as a school and are an IQM Centre of Excellence, which highlights that inclusion at all levels is of paramount importance to us. We are also proud to have been awarded the Gold Status by the Carnegie Centre of Excellence for Mental Health Award.

As we continue to improve, help to take us to the next level.

The Outwood Family of Schools pride ourselves on fully supporting colleagues within the Family both professionally and personally.

We work hard to ensure we reduce workload on staff, allowing more time in the classroom to put our vision of students first, raising standards and transforming lives into practice.

As a founding Trust of the National Institute of Education (NIoT), we will actively invest in your future through working closely with the Outwood Institute of Education and NIoT to offer access to a wide range of CPD opportunities, with all teaching staff receiving a minimum of two hours of CPD each week.

We also offer a generous employment package with a whole host of staff benefits, including family friendly policies, enhanced occupational benefits available (such as maternity, adoption and parental leave) with no qualifying period, funded CPD for qualifications up to and including Masters level plus other exclusive benefits including a partnership with car leasing company, Synergy.

All academies within the Outwood Family have gained the IQM Inclusive Schools Award with 18 having Centre of Excellence status and one holding Flagship status.

If you share our vision, join our family.
