Maiden Erlegh School is now looking for a Head of Science from September 2020. We are a high-achieving, over-subscribed secondary school which is as committed to the welfare of students and staff as it is our high standards.  One of the privileges of joining our school is working with our dynamic, ambitious and positive students. Our science department consists of highly experienced specialists who are committed to delivering an inclusive science curriculum at all levels. This leads to many students furthering their science education at A Level. The outcomes for students are exceptionally high with the subjects gaining an ALPS1 at KS4 in 2019. The department is fully equipped with high spec labs and equipment. 

You will have a passion for Science and a passion for teaching, you will enjoy seeing young people grow in confidence in your subject and flourish personally and you will want to share and develop your own practice further.

As a Head of Science, your core responsibilities will be

  • To contribute to the collective ethos of the school and Trust by requiring the highest professional standards from colleagues and behaviour from students.
  • To provide high quality leadership and management of our Science Department, adopting and modelling a positive and solution focused approach to work, which puts maximising students’ life chances first.
  • To ensure effective and robust implementation of school and Trust policies.
  • To support all students to make exceptional progress, in the spirit of a no excuses culture, and to reduce any differences in performance linked to contextual issues.
  • To ensure literacy, numeracy and Personal, Spiritual, Moral, Social and Cultural (PSMSC) is taught and promoted appropriately through the subjects.
  • To maintain strong retention numbers into and through post 16.
  • To liaise with colleagues across the school and Trust as required.


Professional development is a strength here, thanks to our Teaching School. We offer a flexible CPD programme which staff can tailor to their own needs which includes coaching and training for new entrants to the profession and to support career returners. We are very happy to discuss flexible working arrangements including part-time working and job-sharing.

The school is the founder school of Maiden Erlegh Trust which offers a range of career opportunities in our vibrant and successful schools situated. We have a proven track record of supporting ambitious staff to middle and senior leadership posts and our can offer Specialist Leader of Education and school improvement opportunities to the right candidates.

Maiden Erlegh School, an Ofsted awarded 'Outstanding' school in all inspection categories, is a highly successful comprehensive school providing education and enrichment for over 1,800 students aged 11-18. 

We have been serving our local community for more than 50 years and were one of the first schools nationally to convert to an academy 2011.
