Accountable for: educational standards across the Secondary School, and the behaviour and welfare of all pupils in the Secondary School.

Liaises with: Head of Chinese National Curriculum, Head of Primary

Line Manages: Deputy Head of Chinese National Curriculum (2o), Deputy Head Pastoral, Deputy Head Academic

Position Description

The Head of Secondary takes a lead in Teaching and Learning in the secondary school and is responsible for educational standards. They also lead Pastoral Care in the secondary school, with oversight of the behaviour and welfare of all pupils. As a member of the SLT and other staff teams (as appropriate), they contribute to the development of policy and planning for the school.

Role focus

Leadership and Management

Play a major role, under the overall direction of the Head of School, in formulating and reviewing the School Improvement Plan and the aims and objectives of the Secondary School by:

Establishing the policies through which they shall be achieved.

Leading and managing the staff and resources to that end.

Monitoring progress towards targets.

Deputise for the Head of School and other members of the SLT as required.

Assist the Head of School in proposing, compiling and overseeing the Secondary School financial budgets on an annual basis.

Be responsible for the professional and personal support of Secondary School teaching staff.

In collaboration with primary SLT, update and publish MCC Parent/Student Handbook on an annual basis.

In collaboration with primary SLT, update and publish MCC Faculty Handbook on an annual basis.

HR

Line management of all Secondary School staff and oversight of discipline matters.

Oversight of the Secondary School’s PRD appraisal system for the purpose of informing CPD and performance management.

Participate in the recruitment and development of teaching and non-teaching staff.

Teaching and Learning

Lead the Teaching and Learning strategy across the Secondary School.

Have responsibility for the policies and procedures for the Secondary School curriculum, teaching and learning, assessment, recording and reporting.

Oversee the development, organization and implementation of the Secondary School’s curriculum.

Ensure that the learning and teaching provided by the different teaching teams form a coordinated, coherent curriculum entitlement for individual pupils.

Ensure that information on pupil progress is used to improve teaching and learning, to inform and motivate pupils, to inform parents, to provide necessary reference and transcripts for other educational institutions and to aid the Head of School and the Board in their management of the school.

Ensure that individual pupil’s continuity of learning and effective progression of achievement are provided for in this all through school by liaison with fellow school leaders, teachers and support staff.

Oversee the planning and allocation of resources designed to facilitate the planned curriculum, including advising the Head of School on current/anticipated needs for staff and other resources.

Oversee the planning and coordination of a Secondary School homework policy and the administration of a homework timetable.

Oversee pupil assessment and the monitoring of academic standards.

Provide guidance and support to Secondary Staff in implementing schemes of work and ensure that statutory and school policies are being met.

Ensure that arrangements are in place for the identification and support of pupils of all abilities.

Undertake the normal responsibilities of a Secondary School subject teacher as agreed.

Pastoral Care

Lead the development, organization and implementation for the personal and social development of Secondary School pupils including pastoral care and guidance.

Oversee the effective induction of Secondary School pupils and the determination of appropriate pupil groupings.

Promote standards of conduct, discipline and proper regard for authority and the encouragement of good behaviour amongst Secondary School pupils.

Develop a culture of high attendance and high achievement in the Secondary School.

Handle individual pupil disciplinary cases that may arise.

Ensure a high level of provision for the pastoral needs and well-being of every pupil.

Liaise with parents, carers and external agencies as required.

Links with Stakeholders

Be a conduit between the Head of School, staff and pupils for the communication of information and concerns.

Oversee Secondary School communications with stakeholders and give presentations as necessary.

Attend meetings as appropriate with the Board and parents and provide reports and information as required.

Promote links with other Secondary Schools in the Chengdu and wider region.

Marketing the school both within school and the wider community (including preparation of school printed materials).

General

To attend school events, including at weekends.

To demonstrate a keen interest in all aspects of school life.

To undertake break time/lunchtime and/or after school duties as designated by the Head of Secondary/Head of School.

To undertake any other reasonable duties as designated by the Head of School.
