with Wellington College in China
The College is looking to appoint a new head of department for Senior School English (years 9 to 13) from August 2020.
Building on the current success and stability of the department’s results, we are looking for someone who can successfully a achieve balance between strong examination outcomes (ensuring pupils are supported and challenged to achieve the best they can) and generating genuine passion in pupils for literature. Working together with the Head of Prep English (years 3 to 8) is also an important aspect of this role, to ensure pupils remain challenged and inspired through their years at Wellington.
All pupils take English through to 18 as part of the IB diploma programme, most follow the English A option, but some complete the English B course. The head of English language and literature is currently responsible for the English B curriculum at IB and works closely with the director of EAL, who has overall responsibility for supporting pupils for whom English is a second language.
The department has a strong team with low turnover and is growing in strength year on year. This is an excellent opportunity for someone who has either had head of department experience and is now looking for a new and larger challenge, or someone who already has had curriculum leadership and has proven management experience.
Experience of international settings is particularly welcome, as is experience in multi-lingual environments, the UK state or independent sectors.

Wellington College International Shanghai opened in August 2014 as Wellington’s second partnership school in China, and has rapidly developed a reputation as the premier international school in the city. It currently has 1,280 pupils and continues to grow by over 150 pupils per year. The College is divided into three schools, with a Senior School (years 9 to 13) and Prep School (years 1 to 8) on the main campus and Early Years (nursery and reception) in a new purpose-built centre nearby. The College curriculum combines our focus on the Wellington values with the best of English and international curriculums. The youngest children in the nursery and reception classes follow the Early Years Foundation Stage curriculum. From year 1, the English National Curriculum provides the core of the curriculum in maths and literacy, with other lessons following the International Primary Curriculum. From year 6 up, all children follow a school-devised curriculum, based on the English National Curriculum and taught by subject specialists to prepare for the study of IGCSE subjects in years 10 and 11. Pupils in years 12 and 13 follow the prestigious IB Diploma Programme.
Wellington College International Shanghai aims to be the best international school in China and to be great place for talented professionals to develop their careers. Our academic results to date have been outstanding, our IB students average above 36 points in 2018 and 2019, placing Wellington comfortably alongside the best international IB schools. Most of our IGCSE pupils gain eight or more A*-A grades, with A* being by far the most common grade.
Success in public examinations is important and we celebrate it. However, at Wellington College, excellent exam results and great university destinations, in the UK and worldwide, are only part of the picture. We want our pupils to be the very best people that they can be: to be kind, to have integrity in their actions, to take responsibility when necessary, to have respect for their environment, for others and themselves, and finally to show courage when needed. The Wellington values frame the way we think about what it is be a Wellingtonian, including the ways we work and what we hope to become.
