RSAcademics is delighted to be assisting the Principal of Hulme Grammar School, Tony Oulton, in appointing a new Head of Senior School, to succeed John Budding on his retirement after a long and distinguished career at the school.
Since 1611, the school has been through many iterations and looks towards the challenges of the future and the sector with optimism and a clear strategy in place. The school’s long history gives a sense of perspective which, together with a core belief in the quality of the offering, shapes strategic thinking and planning for the future.
The new Head of Senior School will work alongside the Principal, be a member of the Executive Team and a key player within the Senior Leadership Team, overseeing the strategy for building on existing strengths in the Senior School provision and bringing fresh eyes and energy to shape its future. The Head of Senior School will be responsible for the day-to-day running of this section of this through-school. They will need to be able to keep one eye on the strategic and the other on the quotidian and be adept at balancing the two simultaneously.
The successful candidate will have extensive leadership experience, excellent academic qualifications and know what excellence in education looks like. They will be dynamic, visionary and energetic and solutions-focused. Aligned with the vision and values of our school, they will soon come to treasure our history but be forward-thinking. They will interact daily with many stakeholders among them staff, parents and pupils and find the busy nature of the role stimulating and exciting. They will have integrity, kindness and courage, being unafraid to do difficult things when needed though be deeply empathetic. They will have a solid grasp of the ISI inspection framework and help the school to be always inspection-ready. They will have strong emotional intelligence and excellent interpersonal and communication skills. They will contribute to the school’s Executive Team discussions and decision-making about all aspects of school life. They will be a team-player, trustworthy and have good humour in very generous quantities.

About Hulme Grammar School
Hulme Grammar School, located in Oldham, Lancashire, is a mixed selective school for children between the ages of 2 and 18. It is an independent, all-through mainstream school with a sixth-form. Currently there are 800 students enrolled at the establishment. Classes are co-educational in the Nursery, Infants, Juniors and sixth form and single-sex in Years 7 to 11.

ISI Report
Hulme Grammar School received a scheduled and routine inspection from the Independent School Inspectorate (the body which monitors standards in independent schools) in September 2023.
This inspection was held under the new inspection framework which came into effect in September this year, Hulme being among a handful of the first schools nationally to be inspected according to this new framework.
Under the new inspection framework, schools do not receive a one-word judgement or grading by inspectors. This is important to note: no longer will independent schools be rated ‘Excellent’ or ‘Good’ as they were in the past under the old framework and, in line with that, this report contains no grade.
Instead you will read that we were found to be compliant in all areas and meet the standards and regulations which govern the running of an independent school. The report then comments on a range of aspects of school life – everything from safeguarding and quality of education, risk assessments to pastoral care.
Schools are complex, dynamic institutions, and we welcome the move away from one-word judgements to a more nuanced style of reporting, which highlights existing strengths and outlines areas for development and improvement. We are delighted that the inspectors have highlighted so many of the aspects of Hulme life that we are proud of too. Please take some time to read over the report.
