Job overview

St George’s College is a thriving Catholic coeducational day school. We are known for providing a perfectly balanced education where our students have the support and freedom to find their strengths, develop their understanding and to flourish as they move through the school.

Our Sixth Form students embody the core values of our Georgian community and are wonderful ambassadors for our school. It is the opportunity to walk alongside them and to have an influence on their development in these crucial years that makes the position of Head of Sixth Form so exciting.

With our current Head of Sixth Form retiring after many happy and successful years, we are now seeking someone special to fill this vital and rewarding post. Responsible for over 250 students, the role is both pastoral and academic, supporting our young men and women as they study for their A Level exams and begin to plan and prepare for their next steps.

We are justly proud of our Sixth Form Programme that exposes our students to so much more than an A Level curriculum. Through lectures, trips and community activities, they are challenged to be the best possible version of themselves and to use their skills and experiences to help others – from organising the weekly get-togethers with adults with severe learning difficulties to acting as excellent role models for younger students.

The role offers the opportunity to be an Assistant Head and be a part of our dynamic Senior Management Team.

Based at the heart of our bespoke dedicated Sixth Form building, the Head of Sixth Form is supported by the Heads of Lower and Upper Sixth and a strong team of Sixth Form tutors. Together, they coordinate the exciting and challenging delivery of the UCAS process. This includes working with Oxbridge and Medic coordinators or with top Art and Drama schools, as well as Music Conservatoires – or helping students plan a year out and guiding those who want to take up direct training opportunities in top level companies.

Salary

The salary is dependent on experience and qualifications. The College participates in the Teachers’ Superannuation Scheme. The College adheres to the current statutory requirements for retirement procedures.

Appointment Procedure

A completed Application Form, CV and a brief covering letter, together with the details of two referees should be forwarded to:  Mrs Rachel Owens, Headmistress; St George’s College Weybridge, Weybridge Road, Addlestone, Surrey KT15 2QS or by email to: headmistress@stgeorgesweybridge.com.

The closing date for application is 4pm on Thursday 10 May.

Successful candidates will be invited to long-list interviews on Thursday 17 May and shortlist interviews will take place on Thursday 24 May.

St George’s employs personnel who are best qualified for the post without any discrimination in favour or race, colour, gender or national origin.  All staff must be able to support the Mission Statement of the school.

Benefits of living and working in Weybridge

Weybridge is a small popular town with a good selection of branded and independent shops, great places to eat and beautiful woodlands and canal walks. Weybridge station offers at least four trains an hour taking only 29 minutes to reach London Waterloo station.

The College is situated on the outskirts of Weybridge on an attractive 100-acre site conveniently close to the intersection of the M3 and M25 motorways and just 20 minutes from Heathrow airport.

Academics

There are over 130 teaching staff in the College with an equal split of men and women, and some staff live on campus. Rachel Owens is the incumbent Headmistress, and she and the College are members of HMC and CISC.

The school has a selective entry and is oversubscribed. The majority of children join in First Year (Year 7), although there is a smaller entry into Third Year (Year 9) and the Sixth Form (Lower Sixth). Where space allows, new students may also arrive out of these usual intakes into Second, Third and Fourth Years.

New staff and induction

There is strong support for new teaching staff starting at the College, with an extensive induction programme. Newly appointed staff are encouraged to visit in the Summer Term to receive training and guidance from the Head of Department prior to the beginning of their employment. In addition, the College offers support and on-going training for newly qualified teaching staff lead by Mr Andy Cornick, Deputy Head (Operations) who is responsible for the welfare of new staff. There is an active and social Common Room committee and a broad range of teaching staff, many who have depth of experience and knowledge of St George’s from several years with us. QTS induction is facilitated.

All the teaching staff receive excellent support from business staff: the Bursar directs over 120 College employees including administration, IT, finance and catering. The annual appraisal scheme encourages staff to develop their careers and supports them in identifying training or study to assist in their development as teachers.

We aim to provide a caring and nurturing atmosphere at our independent day school – not just for our students. For everyone who works with us too, we want to make this an enjoyable and fulfilling environment. If you’d like to be part of it, you can look forward to excelling training and support, not to mention a range of outstanding benefits.

If you enjoy working as part of a friendly team and take a real pride in a job well done, this is your opportunity to join us here at St George’s Weybridge.

St George’s Weybridge is committed to safeguarding and promoting the welfare of children and applicants must be willing to undergo child protection screening appropriate to the post, including checks with past employers and the Disclosure and Barring Service.
