Job overview

Head of Sixth Form

The Ferrers School is seeking to appoint a well-qualified, dynamic, creative and enthusiastic leader to be the Progress Leader for Sixth Form (Head of Sixth Form).

This post represents an excellent opportunity for an outstanding teacher with a strong track record of improvement work as a middle leader. The successful candidate will provide leadership and management of the Sixth Form in order to secure high quality teaching and standards of learning, effective academic monitoring and tutoring to support attainment, achievement and behaviour of all students. They will need to have the ability and tenacity to ensure that students achieve our ambitious goals and carry out rigorous monitoring of student progress, the curriculum, recruitment criteria, completion and success rates and all the relevant duties of a main scale teacher.

(Please note that all Subject Specialisms offered at The Ferrers will be considered)

The Sixth Form at The Ferrers School has worked in consortium – The East Northants School (TENC) - with other schools in the local area since 1986. This successful arrangement enables our students to continue to build on their academic achievements, supported by the continuity of the strong pastoral support they have received since they joined The Ferrers School in Year 7.   In addition, the TENC arrangement offers the benefits of expanding our students’ horizons through working with Sixth Formers from other schools and developing their skills and knowledge in new learning environments.

Our Sixth Form combines the strengths of the three schools The Ferrers School, Huxlow Science College and Rushden Academy, who are all rated as "Good" by Ofsted at Post-16 and who work closely together to offer a very wide range of courses and opportunities to our students.  Our students are able to choose from subjects from the three schools and we provide free transport to enable students to access the course on any of our sites.

Students follow a bespoke programme of study to suit their individual needs.  This may be BTEC courses, or 3, 4 or even 5 A levels for our very highest achievers, or a combination of both.  We also offer the Extended Project Qualification (EPQ) to students in both Years 12 and 13 which enhances their research and study skills which are prized by universities.

All students are supported to take part in extra-curricular activities such as the Community Leadership Project, work-experience and mentoring within the school as well as an extensive programme of PSHE that includes advice and preparation for life post Sixth Form.

We have an excellent tradition of success at A level and BTEC and we are very proud of our students’ achievements.  Last year, all students who wanted to go to university secured a place, most at their first choice university, including those within the Russell Group.  Other students were supported to enter apprenticeships or employment.

Some of our students come into the Sixth Form with lower prior attainment than the national average; however, the progress those students make, and the value our Sixth Form adds to students’ performance at A Level or on BTEC programmes is significantly above the national average. The TENC website may be accessed at http://www.tenconline.co.uk/
