Job overview

A rare opportunity to lead sport, games and P.E. at a prestigious London prep-school.

To start September 2018 (or January 2019 for the right candidate).

St Paul’s Cathedral School is looking for a well-qualified and experienced Head of Sport to lead the physical education and sports fixtures of day pupils and choristers across the age range, Reception to Year 8.

Sport is central to St Paul’s Cathedral School’s ethos, where every child enjoys inclusive access to a wide range of sports, games and skills training. Building on a strong pedigree at the School, the Head of Sport will bring their own vision to take the department to the next phase. St Paul’s Cathedral School has a proud history of helping young people win sports scholarships in senior schools.

The successful candidate will continue to drive the school’s inclusive approach to sport, games and P.E., and will maintain and build on excellent relationships with other schools in the London area. The Head of Sport will also be an outstanding teacher of P.E., able to inspire a love for and understanding of sport for its own sake.

With overall responsibility for the school’s fixtures, management of hiring external venues, organising of transport and the management of specialist sports coaches, the Head of Sport will also work closely with the Deputy Head on diary planning to develop a rich calendar of events for all pupils in the school.

Joining St Paul’s Cathedral School at its most exciting moment in recent history, the Head of Sport will play a significant role in helping young people maximise their potential.

It would be an advantage for candidates to have some experience of a boarding school environment, and for the right candidate, accommodation may be available.  Candidates must hold a clean, UK driving licence and have either passed their minibus driving course, or be willing to train.

The Head of Sport will report to the Headmaster.

Set in the iconic grounds of St Paul’s Cathedral, affectionately known as our school chapel, the School is able to maximise local resources such as swimming pools and playing fields, as well as our own astroturf space in the school.

The successful candidate will be joining a fabulous team which embraces new ideas, collaboration, hard work and creativity. You will be very well organised, enthusiastic about teaching and learning, keen to continue to develop your own pedagogy and have the drive to develop and lead the strategic direction of the School’s sports and games.

The right candidate will be a qualified sports teacher, and very likely an excellent sportsperson in their own right. They will have either led a games department in a Primary/Prep setting, or be looking for their first leadership role.

Working in a friendly, warm environment, you will be involved in the whole life of St Paul’s Cathedral School.

Our parents are genuinely supportive and the salary is highly competitive.

If you think this could be for you, then please complete the application form. The School is closed for the Easter break, and will open again on Thursday 26 April, 2018. Thereafter, if you would like an informal discussion with the Headmaster, Simon Larter-Evans, do get in touch.

Call us on 020 7248 5156, or email Clare Morgan at headspa@spcs.london.sch.uk to arrange.

Closing date for the applications is Friday 4 May 2018. We reserve the right to make an appointment before the closing date.

About St Paul's Cathedral School

St Paul’s Cathedral School is a co-educational, Church of England, independent preparatory day school for around 250 children aged 4-13, located in the City of London. It has boarding provision for St Paul’s Cathedral boy choristers, who sing daily at the cathedral, from the age of seven. From September 2023, girl choristers have begun to sing in the cathedral.

The school is owned by the Dean and Chapter of St Paul’s Cathedral; its governing body is made up of five Canons and seven lay members, who are chaired by the Dean. St Paul's can trace its origins back to the 12th century and it existed for several centuries solely to educate the cathedral choristers. It has been co-educational since 2002.
