Job overview

Hampton Court House is seeking an outstanding individual to lead its sport and physical education department.  The school occupies a three-hectare site within landscaped grounds situated opposite Hampton Court Palace, adjacent to Bushy Park. There are 250 day pupils from pre-school through to year 13. Hampton Court House welcomes pupils from all backgrounds and nationalities.

The Head of Sport leads provision throughout the school; teaching all ages from 3 to 16. An interest in physical development at all stages from EYFS through to adulthood is therefore essential.

At Hampton Court House, improving in sport is more important than winning. We celebrate personal bests.  We value progression in fitness, technique, skill and game understanding over winning. We understand and foster the desire to win - a healthy sense of competition is imbued and nurtured from an early age - whilst the sense of self-improvement and development through team work and individual accomplishment is prized above all. Better to lose a game and improve, than to win, but regress.

The school has a natural grass playing field; a multi-sport outdoor hard court; a multi-use indoor space which can accommodate gymnastics, table tennis, martial arts and movement literacy activities; immediate access to Bushy Park for cross-country running.  Arrangements with local centres provide swimming and fitness facilities. Our proximity to the River Thames provides potential for rowing and Olympic lifting via a partnership with a local club.  The school’s core sport programme involves netball, basketball, tennis, athletics, swimming, cricket and football, with plans to add rowing and Olympic weightlifting this academic year.  Additional after-school clubs broaden the range of activities on offer.

The successful candidate will report to the Second Master (Deputy Head Co-curricular) and have a solid background in physical education and sports coaching – ideally in one or more of the core sports listed above - outstanding leadership qualities and be able to demonstrate commitment to the philosophy of personal progression in sport, above all other considerations.

Deadline for applications: Friday 5th October

Nestled in Bushy Park, Richmond-upon-Thames, Hampton Court House is an independent co-educational day school for ages 2 – 18, educating Early Years children in our Pre-Prep School & Nursery, The Little Courtiers, to students in Year 13.

The majority of our pupils elect to stay on to complete their full education with us, enjoying great success in their GCSEs and A Levels: in 2023, 40% of A Level grades were awarded A*/A, resulting in a 100% Oxbridge and Russell Group application success rate. Our GCSE results were equally strong, with 70% of all GCSE grades being awarded A*/A. Hampton Court House was in 2022 ranked in the top 50 independent schools nationwide (The Telegraph) and in the top 10 co-educational independent schools in London (School Owl, 2023).

Our programmes offer an extraordinary education. From the Forest School in Early Years and the award-winning Institut francais LabelFrancÉducation accredited French bilingual programme, to the Nebula Future Researcher’s Programme © in the Sixth Form, Hampton Court House pupils get a head start every step of the way.

We lay the foundations of a lifelong love of learning, and it is important to us that children enjoy being here and look forward to coming to school. In keeping with our ethos, we believe that children need some guided freedom in order to develop their independence and confidence to use their voice. Our non-uniform parkland campus environment, in which staff and pupils alike are addressed on a first-name basis, cultivates an energy where pupils grow in confidence and find themselves.

The school is located close to Hampton Court station, which is 35 minutes from Waterloo and 20 minutes from Wimbledon by train. There are also frequent buses to and from Kingston, Hampton, Teddington and Twickenham, or for staff who drive, there is on-site parking.
