Job overview

St Mary’s Music School is Scotland’s national music school – one of five Government-supported specialist music schools in the UK and the only one of its kind in Scotland. A passion for music lies at the heart of everything we do and we offer musically gifted young people, aged from 9 to 19 years, an exceptional education in an inspiring and supportive environment. We embrace all kind of music- making from classical repertoire to jazz to traditional Scottish music and our alumni go on to perform at the highest level, contributing actively to musical communities throughout the world.

In recent years the School has grown significantly in the scale and breadth of its activity and has big ambitions for the future. To help us achieve our goals we are now delighted to be recruiting for the senior role of full-time Head of Strings.

The role builds on the excellent work carried out for the past 11 years by Mr William Conway in his joint capacity as part-time Head of Strings and Artistic Director and will allow Mr Conway to concentrate more fully on his role of Artistic Director. The post holder will work closely with the Artistic Director, Director of Music, Assistant Director of Music (and Head of Keyboard) and Head of Chamber Music.

The String Faculty plays a major role in the life of the School. The Head of Strings will lead a team of around 15 part-time string teachers and as well as teaching and coaching will spearhead the School’s Community Engagement Programme throughout Scotland, and occasionally beyond. They will also work with the Marketing Manager to develop and deliver the School’s various holiday courses and will support the smooth running of the School’s Academy Programme run in partnership with the Scottish Chamber Orchestra.

This is an exciting opportunity for an individual with the appropriate experience, drive and ambition who wishes to make a real difference.

The School is fully committed to incorporating into this post the successful candidate’s particular interests, skills and passions.

The post is available from late August 2020.

School Information

St Mary's Music School is Scotland's specialist music school and the Choir School of St Mary's Cathedral. It is one of the UK's leading specialist music schools. The school provides a unique education for children with a special talent in music. It is co-educational, non-denominational, day and boarding, and caters for boys and girls aged 9 - 19. It draws pupils from many different backgrounds and from all parts of Scotland as well as elsewhere in the UK and abroad. Entry to the school is by audition and assessment, based on musical ability and potential, regardless of personal circumstances. Government funding, up to 100%, is available through the Aided Places scheme to assist with the cost of tuition and boarding fees.

The choir school was opened in 1880 to educate choristers for the newly built St Mary's Episcopal Cathedral. Nowadays the school has a much wider remit: not only have the ranks of the Cathedral Choir been opened to girls as well as boys, but since 1972 the school has also educated young instrumentalists, composers and singers.
St Mary's Music School is at the forefront of music education, offering the highest quality training as part of a broad and balanced education. The school enjoys a first-rate academic record and offers a rich variety of experience in a friendly and supportive environment, encouraging all pupils to build on their individual talents and develop the personal discipline and confidence required to fulfill their potential as thinking musicians and rounded members of society.

Our gifted pupils share a common love and enjoyment of music. St Mary's Music School aims to ensure that they are given every opportunity to flourish and emerge as excellent musicians capable of using the power of music to inspire and enrich their own lives and the lives of others.
